The third week of the 2021 Chinese Super League has come to a close, so here is a round-up of all results from the Suzhou-based Group B.
Changchun Yatai 0-0 Wuhan
Changchun Yatai kicked off week three in the exact same manner they brought week two to an end – with a goalless draw despite having the stronger performance.
Chen Yang’s side dominated in possession (57%) and had double the amount of chances as their opponents (14 to 7), but were only on target three times throughout the 90 minutes.
The ‘home’ side once again brought on just one substitute in Richairo Zivkovic in this one, with Chen Yang seemingly unwilling to make too many changes to affect the match.
This may be something that changes if results do not continue to reap points from the 2020 China League One champions.
Beijing Guoan 2-0 Dalian Professional
In a week of unsurprising results, Beijing Guoan’s victory over Dalian Professional might be the most of the bunch – with two goals ensuring Slaven Bilić finally claimed all three points for the first time since moving to the Chinese capital.
Two goals in two minutes from Zhang Xizhe in the second half gave Beijing their first victory of the season and further compounded an awful start to the 2021 season for Dalian – who remain the only team in the league sitting on zero points.
Dalian’s disappointment was made worse by Tong Lei’s red card in the 73rd minute, and the northeastern club needs to make serious changes if they have any hopes of clawing back up the standings as the season progresses.
Tianjin Jinmen Tiger 0-1 Hebei
Yet another unsurprising result saw Hebei pick up three points against objectively the worst team in the Chinese Super League, with just a single goal needed to make the difference.
Tianjin, despite having virtually no offensive quality, have surprised at times with a firm defensive effort – picking up a point against Changchun Yatai and conceding just one goal since their opening day drubbing at the hands of Shanghai Port.
Yin Hongbo scored in the 40th minute and Hebei dominated the match, seeing Tianjin lose Cong Zhen to a red card in the 77th minute, ensuring Kim Jong-boo’s side maintained their unbeaten start to the year.
Shanghai Shenhua 1-1 Shanghai Port
The Shanghai derby truly had everything, with a late penalty seeing both sides of the middle kingdom’s largest city claim a point and continue their undefeated start to the campaign.
Aaron Mooy opened the scoring in the 63rd minute of play and, for most fans in attendance, it seemed destined to be heading for a straightforward victory for Shanghai Port.
However, a Mirahmetjan Muzepper red card in the 85th minute suddenly swayed the game, with Christian Bassogog scoring a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time – bringing Shenhua level with their rivals and seeing Group B finish week three on an adrenaline-fuelled high.
