Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose has been sacked after just one season in charge, as confirmed by the club.

The club’s summer rebuild will include searching for a new head coach after they announced today that they had parted ways with the German boss.

“This is not an easy day for all of us, because the mutual admiration among us was, is, and remains strong. After a season that was unsatisfactory for various reasons, we had to realize that in many areas we did not get the maximum out of our potential,” said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke in a statement released on Friday.

Rose himself added: “Despite a difficult season with many imponderables, I was convinced of our path. During our conversation, I got the impression that the 100% conviction of all those responsible is no longer there. Ultimately, we, therefore, decided together to end the collaboration.”

The 45-year-old led Dortmund to second in the Bundesliga this term, though they were eight points adrift of champions Bayern Munich.

BVB also exited the DFB-Pokal in the last 16, losing to second-tier St Pauli, and their performance in Europe was disappointing too. After finishing third on goal difference in a kind Champions League group, they fell at the first hurdle in the Europa League – losing to eventual finalists Rangers.
