Men’s Super-Sixes Weekend 1 Review
Premier Division
After the first weekend of action in Repton, the Premier Division has started to split into two, with the top five teams separated by just three points, chasing one of the coveted top four places and qualification for Finals day.
Hampstead & Westminster are the only team with maximum points after the first four matches, but have four teams snapping at their heels as reigning champions Surbiton, Wimbledon, Sevenoaks and East Grinstead all won three and lost one of their four games to stay in contention.
Repton, Holcombe, Brooklands Manchester University and Reading all seem to be destined to battle for the two relegation places in the second weekend at Whitgift School in Croydon, with Repton and Holcombe having just one match each and Brooklands and Reading having lost all four games so far.
Hampstead & Westminster beat Wimbledon 8-6, Brooklands Manchester University 7-2, Reading 6-1 and Repton 5-1 to storm to the top of the table. Surbiton seemed set to join them on 12 points after a 12-1 win over Reading; a 10-1 demolition of Holcombe and a convincing 8-0 win over East Grinstead, but Wimbledon stopped them in their tracks with a 5-3 win to help set up the four-team log jam.
Wimbledon’s Ed Horler is the leading goalscorer with eleven goals, with Hampstead’s Teague Marcano in second place on eight. Surbiton’s Arjan Drayton-Chana is on seven including five goals scored in the opening match against Reading, along with Sevenoaks’ David Smith.
Division One
Sadly, Beeston and Bowdon both withdrew from Division One, leaving just seven teams to compete at St. George’s College in Addlestone. The hosts, Old Georgians, currently flying high in the outdoor Premier Division, are well on course for promotion to the indoor equivalent after winning their first four games. Canterbury were beaten 10-1, University of Exeter 11-4, Doncaster 8-0 and Team Bath Buccaneers 8-1, with Tom Carson scoring ten goals to go into the second weekend in Telford as the division’s leading goalscorer.
Team Bath’s defeat leaves them three points behind in second, having beaten Loughborough Students 7-3, Doncaster 8-3, and Ashmoor 4-3.
Loughborough Students, the University of Exeter and Canterbury are all on six points with Doncaster on three points and Ashmoor pointless.
Division Two
Bedford, Belper, Ipswich, Oxted, West Herts and Trojans all qualified for the Division Two national competition.
Bedford won four of their five games in Division Two North at Nottingham Trent University, Charlie Axford leading the way with 18 goals. Belper and Ipswich joined Bedford in qualification with ten points. Deeside Ramblers missed out on seven points, with Cambridge City finishing on three points and Harleston Magpies on one point.
In Division One South at the University of the West of England in Bristol, Oxted won all five matches, Sam Driver the division’s top scorer with 22 goals. West Herts and Trojans also qualified with nine points. Croydon Old Whitgiftians and the University of Bristol just missed out on six points and Woking struggled, losing all five games.
