Team Events Thriving – Canadian Fencing Federation

This weekend saw the wrap-up of FIE and EFC competitions for 2019, and consistent rankings for Canadian teams abroad. CFF fencers competed in five different competitions, three of which placed in the top 16 of their respective events.

At the World Cup in Saint-Maur, France, the senior women’s foil team of Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB), Jessica Zi Jia Guo (Toronto, ON), Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON), and Isabella Sabatini (Stratford, ON) placed 12th. They earned a bye in the table of 32, but unfortunately fell to Hungary in the table of 16. Currently, the senior women’s foil team holds a qualifying spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (6th). In 2020, the team will look to keep hold of their spot.

The Absolute Fencing Gear FIE Women’s Sabre World Cup, held in Salt Lake City, Utah, saw the senior women’s sabre team place 15th at the competition. The team of Gabriella Page (Montreal, QC), Marissa Ponich (Edmonton, AB), and Madison Thurgood (Edmonton, AB) faced Egypt in the table of 32, beating them in a very close bout of 45-44. Unfortunately, their winning momentum faltered as they lost 45-30 to Korea in the following table.

The junior women’s epee team, who competed in Burgos, Spain, saw similar results. In the table of 32, the Canadian team was victorious over the host team of Spain, 45-31; but fell in the table of 16 to Italy, 45-29. The Canadian team comprised of Justine Boudreau (Sherbrooke, QC), Zi Shan Guo (Toronto, ON), Grace Hu (Toronto, ON), and Christina Zozulya (Vancouver, BC). They finished 15th.

Notable individual finishes of the weekend go to Jessica Zi Jia Guo (SWF; Saint-Maur, 19th), Maximilien van Haaster (SMF; Tokyo, 20th), Fynn Fafard (JME; Heraklion, 21st), and Gabriella Page (SWS; Salt Lake City, 26th).
