Montreal, Canada – Today, the second day of the Montreal Sabre Grand Prix, was strong with emotions for our Canadian and international athletes. In action, the first day of pools and qualifications for women’s sabre, followed by the elimination rounds and finals for the men.
RESULTS | DAY 2
Pools and qualifications for women’s sabre:
Canadian fencers Marissa PONICH and Gabriella PAGE qualified for the table of 128, but unfortunately PONICH was defeated in that round. With 5 victories in the pools, PAGE earned an exemption from the qualifying round and directly into the table of 64 which will take place on day 3.

Meanwhile, Canadian fencer Joseph POLOSSIFAKIS won his first elimination bout against the Russian TRUSHAKOV with a score of 15-13 after he was down 8-13. He then lost 15-7 against the Italian CURATOLI, currently 3rd in the world ranking. This result reenforces the Canadian position for individual qualification at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
The Sabre Grand Prix was won by Bolade APITHY of France, ranked 8th in the world, 15-12 against the Italian Luca CURATOLI, ranked 4th in the world. The podium was completed by Georgian Sandro BAZADZE and Italian Luigi SAMELE.
