Raiders | RB Drake to Play Some WR Too    Tue Jul 6, 02:45 PM

Mike Clay, from ESPN, reports Las Vegas Raiders RB Kenyan Drake expects to play a more versatile role including taking snaps at wide receiver.

Footballguys view: Jon Gruden has talked previously about using Drake all over the formation. Josh Jacobs is the lead back and will get plenty of work, but it sounds like Drake will have some things designed for him to get the ball in space. From a fantasy perspective, Drake could have some value in PPR formats as a flex player. He’s currently going off the board at RB36 (8.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | N’Keal Harry ready to move on    Tue Jul 6, 02:13 PM

New England Patriots WR N’Keal Harry and his agent formally requested a trade Tuesday, July 6.

Footballguys view: Harry was a first-round pick who just didn’t work out with the Patriots. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game, and he’s not been a great fit for the scheme. We can’t see the Patriots getting much in return for Harry. Perhaps some team is willing to part ways with a late-round pick to give Harry a second chance.

Broncos | Javonte Williams the leader in backfield?    Tue Jul 6, 12:43 PM

Denver Broncos RB Javonte Williams will lead the team in attempts and rushing yards at the end of the season, in the opinion of beat writer Ryan O’Halloran.

Footballguys view: Williams is a talented back, arguably the best in the 2021 NFL draft, and that’s why the Broncos moved up in the early second round to select him. He’ll compete with Melvin Gordon in training camp, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win the no.1 job. However, this has the makings of a RBBC and could be near a 50-50 split between the two. The Broncos are going to be a run-heavy offense and there is RB3/flex value for both backs.

Panthers | Dan Arnold ready to break out    Tue Jul 6, 10:30 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Dan Arnold said he’s ready to take on a bigger role in the Panthers’ offense. ‘Having the opportunity to start becoming a good player and a guy who can make a difference on this team, I’m most excited for that,’ Arnold said. ‘I feel like I’ve done my time; I’m ready to go out and make plays consistently.’

Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs looking for deep sleeper tight ends are looking at Arnold based on how he’s flashed earlier in his pro career and based off the opportunity he now has with the Panthers. In 2020 with the Cardinals, Arnold had 31 receptions on 45 targets for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Arnold will compete with Ian Thomas to be the lead tight end for the Panthers. In most leagues, Arnold is not getting drafted so keep him on your waiver wire speed dial as a TE3 with upside if he hits for his new team.

Jets | Keelan Cole sees time with starters    Mon Jul 5, 02:38 PM

New York Jets WR Keelan Cole received snaps with the first-team offense during offseason workouts and could compete for a starting job during training camp.

Footballguys view: There has been a steady drumbeat this offseason about Cole. The Jets wide receiver situation is one to watch in training camp and the preseason. They have Corey Davis and rookie Elijah Moore as potential starters on the outside with Jamison Crowder working the slot. Cole is going to battle with Moore for that outside spot and will get work as a reserve if he’s not a starter. They also could use 3-WR sets with Davis and Cole on the outside and Moore in the slot.

Browns | Nick Chubb may be paced early on    Mon Jul 5, 12:45 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb could be paced early on in order to attempt to get him through 24 games through the preseason, regular season and playoffs, in the opinion of beat writer Mary Kay Cabot.

Footballguys view: It’s a 17-game regular season schedule. Add on the preseason and a potential deep postseason run, and you can see how Chubb could be managed. Keep this in mind early in the season if Kareem Hunt is getting a bit more work. Chubb missed four games last year due to a knee injury and will have his workload monitored. He’s a top-5 fantasy running back who is going off the board in the middle of the first round of most drafts.

Browns | Anthony Schwartz update    Mon Jul 5, 12:41 PM

Cleveland Browns WR Anthony Schwartz (hamstring) should be ready to practice during training camp, but the Browns want to make sure his hamstring is fully healed before turning him loose.

Footballguys view: Schwartz, a 2021 third-round pick out of Auburn, has a game that is all about speed, speed and more speed. Hamstring injuries are especially concerning for speedy players like him. The team is likely to test him out at the beginning of camp to see how much he can handle early on. A big play waiting to happen (six plays from Schwartz went over 50 yards in 2020), Schwartz is competing for no.4 on the depth chart behind Odell Beckham Jr, Jarvis Landry and Rashard Higgins.

Jaguars | Trevor Lawrence signs rookie deal    Mon Jul 5, 11:19 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars No. 1 overall pick QB Trevor Lawrence signed his four-year, $36.8 million rookie deal that includes $24.1 million in guaranteed money Monday, July 5. All rookie, first-round deals include fifth-year options.

Footballguys view: Lawrence has the tools to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. He’s a rare “can’t miss” prospect in the same way guys like Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning or John Elway were thought of. Lawrence is smart, accurate, has the arm strength to make all the throws required in the NFL and he’s capable of picking up yards with his legs if need be. He’ll start from day one, likely have some rookie struggles but pick up on things quickly.

Browns | Odell Beckham recovering well    Mon Jul 5, 09:42 AM

Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. (knee) has looked like a freak of nature in the way that he has recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, in the opinion of beat writer Mary Kay Cabot.

Footballguys view: It’s a make-or-break year for Beckham. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game ever since he signed in Cleveland. The Browns will probably be cautious with him in the early part of training camp. He’s more of a WR3/Flex play for Fantasy GMs in 2021.

Titans | Delanie Walker expects to sign soon    Mon Jul 5, 08:52 AM

Free-agent TE Delanie Walker (Titans) expects to sign with a team before training camp.

Footballguys view: Walker has been getting a bit of interest on the open market. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns but is back in action for the 2021 season. The 49ers could be his landing spot. Walker played for the 49ers from 2006 to 2012.

Jets | Corey Davis made big leap    Sun Jul 4, 09:03 PM

New York Jets WR Corey Davis averaged 2.58 receiving yards per route run in 2020, improving on his 2019 mark by more than a yard.

Footballguys view: Davis flourished with the Titans last year, and that’s why the Jets were so excited to sign him in free agency. He is coming off a career high of 984 yards and five touchdowns, along with his second-highest target total (92). With a rookie quarterback Zach Wilson, Davis should be considered a WR4/flex for Fantasy GMs in 2021.

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa struggled over middle    Sun Jul 4, 08:24 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa’s 67.9 completion percentage on throws between the numbers ranked 30th among 32 qualified quarterbacks in 2020.

Footballguys view: Most young quarterbacks struggle over the middle, and that’s one of the reasons they can be easy to gameplan against. Tagovailoa is going to be asked to show more aggression as a passer in 2021, and that includes being better over the middle. The tight ends will help there, but so will slot receiver Jaylen Waddle. The 2021 first-round pick is a playmaker who can take a short pass and turn it into long gains.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb moving around    Sun Jul 4, 07:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb has been playing four different receiver spots during the offseason, and head coach Mike McCarthy said he expects Lamb to make a ‘jump’ in his second season.

Footballguys view: Lamb should take that next step that most talented receivers do. With QB Dak Prescott back and healthy, the team’s passing game should thrive. Lamb should push Amari Cooper for the no.1 target in the offense. Forecasting him for a top-15 finish sounds about right.

Colts | RB Taylor the ‘Main Guy’ in Backfield    Sun Jul 4, 03:19 PM

Zak Keefer, from The Athletic, reports Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich acknowledged the run game will go through Jonathan Taylor, who has “earned the right to be the main guy” in the Colts’ backfield.

Footballguys view: Some have predicted a regression from Taylor based on historical data in the NFL. Taylor is one of 30 running backs since 2000 to top 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie, but only five backs in that group had more rushing yards in their second season. History aside, it looks like Taylor will be able to beat those numbers based on his role. Yes, Marlon Mack (when healthy) could push for more snaps. Yes, Nyheim Hines will get plenty of work as a receiver. However, Taylor should be able to post RB1 numbers for your fantasy team as the lead back for the Colts.

Browns | Will Put More on Mayfield’s Plate    Sun Jul 4, 02:58 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns to “put more on Baker Mayfield’s plate (this season) because they know he can handle it.”

Footballguys view: Cabot, one of the best Browns beat writers, speculates we could see no-huddle offense implemented at times for Mayfield. He’s had the same playcaller for back-to-back seasons entering 2021 and should be more comfortable calling his own audibles and using tempo as a weapon. Mayfield is a streaming QB option for Fantasy GMs and a QB2 you can now pick up at QB19 (12.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chargers | RB Jackson on the Bubble?     Sun Jul 4, 02:56 PM

Fernando Ramirez, from Sports Illustrated, speculates Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson is “on the bubble.”

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall when the Chargers selected Larry Rountree in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft. Jackson is a slashing running back with talent as a reserve but he missed six games to knee and quad injuries last year and may now be on the outside looking in. He’s got a $920k cap hit this year with zero in dead money. We’ll see if a strong training camp and preseason can save Jackson’s job.

Cowboys | RB Elliott ‘way more elusive’ per RBs Coach    Sun Jul 4, 02:54 PM

Jon Machota, from The Athletic, reports Cowboys running backs coach Josh Hicks said Ezekiel Elliott is “way quicker, way more elusive, more fluent” than he was in 2020.

Footballguys view: There has been nothing but glowing reports about Elliott from Cowboys camp – from reporters, OC Kellen Moore and now his RBs coach is pitching in. Elliott had a poor 2020 season and only had three rushes over 20 yards last year. With QB Dak Prescott back in action, things should open up for Elliott. Couple that with his improved speed and elusiveness to see how a bounce-back season for the superstar running back is likely in 2021. He’s an RB1 for Fantasy GMs as per usual, and if he finished 2021 as the best running back in fantasy football it would not be a surprise.

49ers | Offense To Be ‘Drastically Different’ with QB Trey Lance    Sun Jul 4, 02:50 PM

Connor Orr, from Sports Illustrated, reports the 49ers offense will be “drastically different” when QB Trey Lance is in the game.

Footballguys view: An interesting perspective from Orr, who looks back on Kyle Shanahan’s work with Robert Griffin III in Washington years ago. Lance, like Griffin, is a dangerous rusher who can be a threat to run no matter the down and distance. We could see a run-heavy approach from the 49ers if (when?) Lance takes over as the starter. Keep that in mind when considering pass catchers like TE George Kittle, WR Brandon Aiyuk and WR Deebo Samuel in your fantasy drafts.

Jaguars | Ground Game to Be Centerpiece?    Sun Jul 4, 02:48 PM

Connor Orr, from Sports Illustrated, speculates the Jacksonville Jaguars could center their offense on the run game in 2021.

Footballguys view: Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer had a run-heavy approach during his time coaching the Buckeyes of Ohio State. The team’s offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, used the ground game as the centerpiece during Russell Wilson’s rookie season with Seattle years ago. Now, those two will be calling the shots for the Jaguars offense in 2021. This is good news for James Robinson. His fantasy value took a hit when the Jaguars selected RB Travis Etienne in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, if they’re running early and often he could post strong RB2 numbers for Fantasy GMs.

Saints | Jameis Winston to adjust style?    Sat Jul 3, 11:33 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston led the NFL with a 10.8 average depth of target during his five years as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and during the same stretch, the Saints ranked dead last as a team in average depth of target.

Footballguys view: There’s going to be an adjustment from Winston, but there will be an adjustment from Sean Payton. The two sides will work together to build a system that fits both Winston’s style while also cutting down on the turnovers. That should come with more efficient passes, working the short-to-intermediate routes to then take some shots downfield. It will be fewer shots 20 yards or more than we’re used to seeing from Winston but that’s the compromise that could make Winston a strong starter for the Saints.

Ravens | Tylan Wallace in rare company    Sat Jul 3, 11:15 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Tylan Wallace was one of three receivers in the 2021 draft class to average more than 3.0 yards per route run in both 2019 and 2020.

Footballguys view: Wallace has track speed and was a deep threat, arguably the nation’s best, for Oklahoma State over the last few years. He averaged over 100 yards per game over the last three seasons and his 43 contested catches are the most in the FBS during that time. Wallace will be a deep threat for the Ravens while working on his route running and release against press coverage in the pros.

Giants | Evan Engram lacked efficiency    Sat Jul 3, 10:55 PM

New York Giants TE Evan Engram’s 5.9 yards per target in 2020 was fourth worst in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Engram has incredible talent, and that’s why he was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, He’s never played up to his potential in the pros due to injuries and inefficiency. Engram has been a low-end TE2 (TE19, TE18) over the last two seasons. We’ll see if better play from QB Daniel Jones gets Engram back on track after a rookie season where he finished as the no.5 tight end in non-PPR leagues.

Giants | Sterling Shepard popular with QB    Sat Jul 3, 10:25 PM

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard has averaged 8.1 targets per game from QB Daniel Jones over the past two seasons.

Footballguys view: Shepard is not a no.1 wide receiver, even though the Giants have miscast him as such in years past. With the addition of Kenny Golladay, we’ll see Shepard work against softer coverage as their no.2 receiver. The talent and upside is there with Shepard but he needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential. He’s a deep flex WR5/WR6 for Fantasy GMs, just like he has been over the last couple of seasons.

  Seahawks | K.J. Wright not a target    Sat Jul 3, 05:21 PM

Giants | Daniel Jones working out with teammates    Sat Jul 3, 05:05 PM

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones has worked out with RB Saquon Barkley, WR Kenny Golladay, WR Sterling Shepard, WR Darius Slayton and WR David Sills leading up to training camp.

Footballguys view: Jones is in a make-or-break season in 2021. He’s got the talent around him to play much better and more efficiently this season. The Giants added more weapons on offense and having a healthy Barkley will greatly improve the chances that Jones improves his play. He was sacked often in 2020 and that’s why his decision-making skill seemed to take a step back from his rookie season. We’ll see if better protection, better weapons and a stronger rushing attack propel Jones to a bounce-back season.

Steelers | Better 2021 for Diontae Johnson?    Sat Jul 3, 01:33 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson is among the players veteran NFL analyst Gil Brandt ‘guarantees’ will perform better in 2021.

Footballguys view: Johnson still hasn’t played up to his potential in the pros. He led the league in drops last year and that’s why Fantasy GMs are taking him as a low-end WR2/WR3 flex in drafts leading up to this season. The potential to do more is there with Johnson if he improves his concentration.

Bengals | Big leap ahead for Joe Mixon?    Sat Jul 3, 12:28 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon is in line to receive more than 300 touches (with more targets in the passing game) in 2021 for the second time in five pro seasons, and ‘the stage is set for a potential leap into The Superstar Club,’ in the opinion of NFL.com analyst Dan Hanzus.

Footballguys view: There have been plenty of reports about a larger role for Mixon in 2021. If he stays healthy, Mixon could be an RB1 for your fantasy team. Samaje Perine will get some work as a backup and there’s a chance rookie Chris Evans gets on the field as a receiving back here and there. He’s going off the board at RB13 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Browns | Odell Beckham Jr. hurting QB?    Sat Jul 3, 12:03 AM

Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr.’s targets have resulted in a 72.4 passer rating for QB Baker Mayfield, and Mayfield has an 89.9 rating when targeting any other player.

Footballguys view: Beckham is looking to have a bounce-back season after an injury-shortened 2020. He’s been on the road to recovery since tearing his ACL and obviously has to build stronger chemistry with Mayfield. He’s been limited this offseason but should be ready by the start of the regular season. The Browns have a run-heavy offense, so even by staying healthy and producing better we see Beckham as more of a WR3/flex player for Fantasy GMs in 2021.

Chiefs | Drops an issue for Mecole Hardman    Fri Jul 2, 11:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman had 15 more receptions on 21 additional targets in 2020 compared to his rookie season, finishing with 22 more receiving yards and a 13.7 drop rate.

Footballguys view: Hardman has plenty of speed to take the top off the defense but the drops and inconsistent play have limited his fantasy value. The reporters around the Chiefs have been going on and on about rookie TE Noah Gray who could get more work in the passing game behind starter Travis Kelce. Even with Sammy Watkins moving on, this news about Gray means assuming Hardman will have a larger role than he has over the last two years may be unwise.

Jaguars | Laviska Shenault a QB’s best friend    Fri Jul 2, 10:53 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Laviska Shenault Jr. caught three or more passes in every game he completed as a rookie, and quarterbacks compiled a cumulative rating of 119 on throws to Shenault.

Footballguys view: Shenault has incredible talent and a unique skill set that could be unlocked this season. He’s got plenty of speed, great hands and concentration with the ability to be strong after the catch. He should quickly be able to become a trusted target of QB Trevor Lawrence, and Shenault could easily outperform his current ADP of WR44 (10.03) if he plays up to his potential.

Rams | Van Jefferson making a leap?    Fri Jul 2, 09:41 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Van Jefferson has been a ‘major bright spot’ during offseason activities, according to head coach Sean McVay. ‘He’s come back establishing himself as a legitimate dude, a guy that we’re counting on for big things and I think the future is so bright,’ McVay said.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Jefferson was underwhelming as a rookie. That could all change this year with better play at the quarterback position (thank you Matthew Stafford!) and more chances to showcase his talent. Jefferson has more opportunity with Josh Reynolds and Gerald Everett gone (142 vacated targets) and minimal competition (only DeSean Jackson) on the no.3/no.4 WR spectrum of the depth chart. Jefferson is currently a player you can take a late-round flier on.

Cardinals | Kyler Murray wants to run less?    Fri Jul 2, 09:24 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray said his running ability ‘should be a luxury’ for the offense. ‘And it kind of wasn’t like that last year,’ Murray said ‘It was kind of me having to run for us in a sense and once my shoulder was banged up, or whatever, and I wasn’t trying to put myself out there and take those hits and stuff like that, we kind of hit a lull.’

Footballguys view: Any scrambling quarterback should want to run less as they go on in their careers. Murray is developed as a passer and should be able to make more plays from the pocket, but his legs will always be an asset for his game. He’s incredibly dangerous as a runner, and his fantasy value is sky high because he can attack a defense on the ground or through the air.

49ers | JaMycal Hasty the odd man out?    Fri Jul 2, 09:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB JaMycal Hasty could begin the season on the practice squad, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The 49ers are stacked at the running back position, but Hasty has enough talent to stick around on the practice squad. We’re excited to watch the running back battle in training camp. Raheem Mostert is the lead back but rookie Trey Sermon has great talent and is a perfect fit for the Shanahan system. We’ll see who comes out on top, and how much of a RBBC this becomes in training camp and the preseason.

Vikings | Irv Smith new and improved?    Fri Jul 2, 09:02 PM

Footballguys view: Smith did not have a breakout season in 2020 but has the chance to do that in his third season. He’s the lead tight end and Kyle Rudolph is now with the Giants. Smith should be the third option in the passing game behind Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen. If Smith plays up to his potential, there’s a possibility he could post low-end TE1 numbers.

NFL | Delanie Walker wants to play    Fri Jul 2, 07:28 PM

Free-agent TE Delanie Walker (Titans) said he wants to play this season but is not sure which teams are interested in him.

Footballguys view: Walker opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns but he wants to get back to playing football this year. He has had some interest earlier this offseason and could end up back with the 49ers. Walker is no longer the player he used to be but some team should want him as a veteran depth player. We’ll see if he can find a new home before the start of training camp.

Jets | Josh Adams likely to have role in offense    Fri Jul 2, 06:08 PM

New York Jets RB Josh Adams is expected to be a candidate for the starting running back job during training camp and likely will have a solid role in the offense even if he does not win the starting job.

Footballguys view: Adams has some Gus Edwards to his game. He’s not going to get the opportunity like Edwards will/does with the Ravens, but Adams has more talent than some think. He’s a powerful back who can win at the point of contact and could be a power option for the Jets backfield. They don’t have a set starter or lead back, but guys like veterans Tevin Coleman/Ty Johnson and rookie Michael Carter should get most of the work. Adams could get on the field near pay dirt because of his size and intent.

NFL | Josh Gordon looking to play again    Fri Jul 2, 04:39 PM

Free-agent WR Josh Gordon (Seahawks) has applied for reinstatement from his indefinite suspension and hopes to sign with a team for training camp, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Here we go again. We’ll see if some team takes a chance on the supremely talented wide receiver…although it’s been years since he’s done much of anything on the football field. Gordon has been randomly drug tested over the last three months and has passed the tests.

Chargers | WR Williams to Play ‘X’ Receiver    Fri Jul 2, 03:17 PM

Daniel Popper, from The Athletic, reports Chargers WR Mike Williams is expected to play the “X” receiver spot in new OC Joe Lombardi’s offense.

Footballguys view: Another day, and another article pointing out how Williams will play the “X” position in Lombardi’s offense – which is the Michael Thomas role. Yes, everyone should be paying attention to this consistent drumbeat. Williams has talent but he’s never truly played up to his potential in the pros. In this role, if healthy, Williams could prove to be a tremendous value for Fantasy GMs. His current ADP is WR53 (12.04) in 12-team PPR leagues which has risen slightly since this Lombardi report came out a few weeks ago.

Bills | RB Moss Set to Take Over Backfield?    Fri Jul 2, 03:15 PM

Joe Buscaglia, from The Athletic, reports Buffalo Bills RB Zack Moss could “take over the backfield in 2021 if he continues to improve.” He speculates Moss could get as many as 70 percent of the team’s snaps in 2021.

Footballguys view: Moss has to get healthy as an ankle injury has kept him from participating fully this offseason. He should be ready for training camp and the start of the regular season. If he does beat out Devin Singletary for that primary role, Moss could perform like a RB2 with upside. His current ADP of RB41 is due to the expected RBBC between Moss and Singletary. If one emerges in camp, expect that to change. Stay tuned.

Bills | TE Hollister a Potential Starter    Fri Jul 2, 03:11 PM

Joe Buscaglia, from The Athletic, reports Buffalo Bills TE Jacob Hollister could become the team’s starter if Dawson Knox’s struggles continue in 2021.

Footballguys view: Hollister has flashed a bit of talent during his time with the Patriots and the Seahawks in his career.
