Like I said in my previous NBA piece, I’m not an avid follower of the sport anymore (I prefer college hoops. Starts in less than a week!) but I have noticed the league has gotten off to an exciting start. My Knicks are 5–2 and 3rd in scoring with Steph and the Warriors back near the top of the West. Tonight there is a loaded schedule of games but I really gravitated towards the aforementioned Warriors hosting LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets.
Charlotte is torching the nets this season averaging a league best 117.5 pts/g which is spearheaded by a roster with 5 guys all scoring over 14 pts/g. The team leader Miles Bridges is averaging just over 23 while LaMelo is dropping over 20 a game. It’s an exciting brand of basketball but they REALLY struggle on defense. They’re giving up 115 pts/g which is good for 29th in the league. Also worrisome is they have only held one opponent to less than 111 points over their first 8 games which isn’t ideal when playing Steph and crew.
The Warriors have exploded out of the gates in 2021 only losing to Memphis in OT by 3. The offense isn’t as dynamic as it once was but they’re still averaging just under 111pts/g with their defense still ranking top 10 while allowing just 101.8 per game. Curry is still shimmying his to way to an average of almost 30 pts/g and three others are scoring over 14/g. Like mentioned, their defense is keeping teams in check all over the court and ranks top 5 in 3P% against and top 10 in overall FG%.
Ultimately, the Hornets are one the NBA’s most exciting watches but are still developing as an all around squad. The Warriors may not be the juggernaut we saw a few years ago, but with Steph back to full strength and a smothering defense keeping opponents at bay, beating them will be difficult for even the league’s best teams which Charlotte is not. I may not know a ton about the league anymore, but I do know that defense still wins and that’s why I’m laying the juice and playing Warriors ML tonight.
