2021-2022 NFL Combo Mock Draft

This is a combo mock draft of all the 2021 and 2022 prospects. How would the draft have gone if all the players were available? Here’s the mock, and before you read it, keep two things in mind: 1) The 2021 prospects don’t have their rookie campaigns taken into account; otherwise, someone like Creed Humphrey would be a first-round pick. 2) The 2021 players were removed from each team’s roster for needs purposes.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

It’s hard to imagine Trevor Lawrence not being the first pick in this combo mock. Lawrence was the best quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft, and those quarterbacks dwarfed all the signal-callers in 2022. Remember, this combo mock wipes out all needs filled from the 2021 NFL Draft, so Jacksonville would have to re-draft Lawrence to obtain a quarterback.

Detroit Lions: Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU

Remember, Amon-Ra St. Brown is not on the roster, per the rules of this mock draft. The Lions have nothing at receiver as a result. We know they were initially targeting Drake London at No. 2 before Travon Walker blew up the combine and allowed Aidan Hutchinson to fall to them. With that in mind, Ja’Marr Chase is the no-brainer selection – even over a quarterback because the Lions love Jared Goff very much for some reason.

Houston Texans: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

The Texans can’t see what they have in Davis Mills because they don’t have Mills under these rules. Jeff Driskel is their starting quarterback without Mills on the roster, so this pick would have to be used on a quarterback. Zach Wilson struggled as a rookie, but we’re not taking that into account here either.

New York Jets: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State

Joe Douglas loves upside from his draft prospects. With no Zach Wilson available in this combo mock or on the roster, he would settle for Trey Lance, who has similar, or even better potential. The cool thing is that Lance would actually get to play right away in New York.

New York Giants: Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

We know the Giants wouldn’t draft Justin Fields because they traded away the pick used to select Fields to the Bears. As a consequence, the Giants would obtain the best non-quarterback available, and that would be Kyle Pitts. With Evan Engram gone, Pitts would fill a huge need and give Jones a dependable intermediate target.

Carolina Panthers: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

The Panthers had a chance to draft Justin Fields as well, but they passed on him. Thus, they would still draft a left tackle, as they did in the 2022 NFL Draft. Penei Sewell is better than the three tackles chosen this April, so he would be the pick.

Chicago Bears: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Perhaps this is a controversial move, but I’m returning the Bears’ pick to them because they never traded it for Justin Fields in this reality. In this case, the decision to draft Fields becomes very easy. Hopefully in this alternate universe, the Bears actually surround him with weapons and blockers.

Atlanta Falcons: Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama

Amazingly, we have no 2022 NFL Draft prospects chosen yet, which should tell you how pedestrian that draft class was. The Falcons selected Drake London No. 8 overall, but Jaylen Waddle is definitely the better receiver prospect.

Seattle Seahawks: Travon Walker, DE, Georgia

A 2022 NFL Draft prospect finally comes off the board! The Seahawks really needed to upgrade their pass rush entering the 2022 NFL Draft, but didn’t feel comfortable with Jermaine Johnson’s character concerns. They’ll have no such worries with Travon Walker.

New York Jets: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

There’s no Garrett Wilson or Elijah Moore on the roster, per these rules, and the Jets really need to give Zach Wilson, erm, Trey Lance some weapons. Devonta Smith is the best receiver prospect available.

Washington Redskins: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

We know the Redskins love their Alabama prospects. I imagine they’d pounce at the opportunity to land Patrick Surtain to bolster their secondary, which struggled in 2021.

Minnesota Vikings: Aidan Hutchinson, DE, Michigan

And now we get to the second prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s amazing how much better the 2021 class was compared to this year’s group. At any rate, the Vikings would love to obtain Aidan Hutchinson to pressure Aaron Rodgers.

Houston Texans: Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina

The Texans decided to go with a cornerback over an offensive lineman at No. 3 overall. I mention this because they’d have a debate between Rashawn Slater versus Jaycee Horn. Given their decision-making, this pick would be Horn.

Baltimore Ravens: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State

The Ravens must improve their defense, and I’m sure they’d love to have Micah Parsons instead of Jayson Oweh. Parsons is the choice over Rashawn Slater and the 2022 tackles.

Philadelphia Eagles: Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati

The Eagles have nothing at cornerback aside from Darius Slay. They would’ve considered Trent McDuffie or Kaiir Elam at No. 18 overall had they not traded the pick to A.J. Brown.

New Orleans Saints: Rashawn Slater, OT/G/C, Northwestern

The Saints spent their second opening-round selection on Trevor Penning. They’d do well to select Rashawn Slater instead. Slater would be an amazing replacement for the departed Terron Armstead.
