During the Magic Showcase 2021 stream earlier this week, Wizards of the Coast revealed the roadmap for releases in 2022. The 2022 timeline featured four new sets for standard play. The year kicks off with a trip to Kamigawa, followed by a new adventure in New Capenna. The second half of the year shines a spotlight onto Dominaria, starting with a return to the plane in Dominaria United. To end the year, Magic is diving deeper into one of the cornerstone stories in the game’s history. In the last quarter of 2022, players will get another look at The Brothers War.
The Battle That Defined a Plane
The Brothers War is a novel that describes the feud between Mishra and Urza. The two brilliant artificers fought on their home plane of Dominaria. Mishra had joined forces with the Phyrexian invaders to destroy his brother to have sole possession of the Thran Powerstone. Urza wished to have the other have of the powerstone as well, and the fought for years. The eventual climax of their war shaped the history of Magic forever. The Brothers War looks to bring this story to life in the best way Wizards knows how – through a new standard set.

The final set of 2022 is sure to be one with plenty of power. It already has been touted as an “artifact based” set on the showcase stream. If the past few artifact sets are a baseline for power, then The Brothers War is definitely going to take over the Standard environment.
