The Houston Texans fired head coach David Culley after just one season with the team. In fact, Culley did not even last a full calendar year with Houston, as he was hired on January 29, 2021. He and the Texans finished with a 4-13 record, which was good enough for third in the AFC South.
Despite a relatively impressive performance heading up one of the weakest rosters in the league, the Texans ousted Culley and now need a new head coach. Here are three possible candidates for the Houston Texans’ head coaching position.
Nathaniel Hackett
The Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator has been a relatively hot name as teams look for new head coaches. The Jaguars have reached out to him, and they will not be the only team. Why not, considering he was the coordinator that will very probably lead Aaron Rodgers to a second-straight MVP award.
Hackett has been on board for three straight 13-win seasons, two seasons in a row as the NFC’s number one seed and two consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances. The run game has thrived under Hackett and head coach Matt LaFleur’s watch unlike any other period in Rodgers’ career. He would be a great choice, if the Texans can lure him there.
Kevin O’Connell
Kevin O’Connell, the Rams offensive coordinator, oversees one of the best big-play offenses in the entire NFL. Matt Stafford threw the ball deep with regularity and it often ended in fireworks. If the Texans need to inject some excitement along with the stability and creativity of a young (36-year-old) coach, then O’Connell could be a solid selection.
The Texans will likely not get one of the bigger names of the offseason, as they just ousted a coach with promise after a decent season with a bad roster. They also need to find out what to do with Deshaun Watson. But if O’Connell wants to become a head coach, the Texans may be one of the only ones to come calling in a serious manner.
Leslie Frazier
On the defensive side of the ball, Leslie Frazier has led a very opportunistic and sometimes very stingy Buffalo Bills defense. The Texans may want to mix it up and go with a defensive head coach, as Bill O’Brien and Culley were both offensive guys.
The main issue is, there is not very much talent on this roster defensively. The players and picks Houston gets back from trading Watson may mitigate this slightly, but if there is anyone who could make something with nothing, it might be Frazier. Case in point; the Bills lost their best defensive back in Tre’Davious White and did not miss a beat. Frazier is worth a call here.
