Sublime Sherrock reaches second round

Fallon Sherrock (Grand Slam outright 50/1) stole the headlines once more as she defeated Gabriel Clemens 5-3 in her final group game to seal a place in the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts.

The 27-year-old broke the record for the highest average by a female player when beating Mike De Decker 5-0 on Sunday and will now take part in the knockout stages.

With Peter Wright (Grand Slam outright 11/1) despatching De Decker 5-0 earlier, the Queen of the Palace needed to beat world number 24 Clemens by at least two legs in order to progress from Group E.

At 3-1 down, it looked an unlikely prospect but she rattled off four consecutive legs to send the Wolverhampton crowd into a frenzy.

The clincher came via a stunning ‘Big Fish’ 170 checkout and now she will face Mensur Suljovic (Match betting – Suljovic 4/9, Sherrock 7/4) on Thursday – one of the players she conquered in the World Championship two years ago when she initially made her name.

There was also a clash of the heavyweights as Gary Anderson averaged 103 in beating Raymond van Barneveld to seal his place in the knockout where he will face Michael Van Gerwen (Match betting – Van Gerwen 1/3, Anderson 23/10).

Defending champion Jose De Sousa (Grand Slam outright 14/1) also survived a scare as he secured his spot in the last 16 despite losing 5-3 to Luke Humphries.

Humphries needed to win by three legs and was 4-1 up but De Sousa managed to fight back and get the requisite number of legs to advance.

On Wednesday night, Welsh pair Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are in action with the tournament now moving to a best-of-19 leg knockout format.

Price, seeking to win a third Slam title, will face the World Youth Champion Bradley Brooks (Match betting – Price 1/12, Brooks 13/2) while Clayton is up against UK Development Tour ace Nathan Rafferty (Match betting – Clayton 1/10, Rafferty 6/1).

James Wade, a three-time runner up in this tournament, faces Austrian Rowby-John Rodriguez (Match betting – Wdae 4/9, Rodriguez 7/4).

Finally, the rejuvenated European champion Rob Cross faces the challenge of Ryan Joyce (Match betting – Joyce 21/10, Cross 4/11).
