Vijay Hazare Trophy: Record-breaking Shaw powers Mumbai into final | Cricket News

The fortunes of domestic powerhouses Mumbai and Karnataka in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinal hinged on the performance of their batsmen, particularly in-form openers Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal (64; 64b; 9×4; 1×6).
At the IAF ground, in New Delhi, both youngsters were amongst runs on Thursday, but it was Shaw’s masterclass, a 122-ball 165 (17×4; 7×6) which powered three-time champions into the final. Mumbai will face Uttar Pradesh, who registered a five-wicket win over Gujarat, in the title round.
In the high-voltage semifinal clash, Mumbai bowlers complemented Shaw’s effort to guide their team to a 72-run win over the defending champions. Karnataka’s performance was good in patches but wasn’t enough to cross the finish line. Chasing Mumbai’s 322, Karnataka folded up for 250 in 42.4 overs.
Skipper R Samarth invited Mumbai to bat. Mumbai openers Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) were initially tied down by Karnataka’s opening bowling pair of Prasidh Krishna (3/64) and Ronit More (1/61). Prasidh got the breakthrough in the fifth over when Jaiswal edged to wicketkeeper BR Sharath. But the momentum failed to shift in Karnataka’s favour as Shaw held up one end and opened up in the eighth over, bowled by Prasidh, which yielded 21 runs.
The arrival of Shams Mulani (45) shifted the momentum further in Mumbai’s favour as his third-wicket association with Shaw yielded 159 runs. Although he remained subdued throughout his innings, he rotated the strike to allow Shaw to score freely and the 21-year-old tore into Karnataka’s bowling.
Karnataka missed their mainstay pacer Abhimanyu Mithun, who is injured. In the middle overs, barring Gowtham, all others went for runs. Shaw raced to his fourth century of the tournament in 79 balls and in the next 32 balls he completed 150. He was finally dismissed when he was adjudged leg before off Vyshak Vijaykumar (4/56). Shaw’s 747 runs so far in the competition, bettered Mayank Agarwal’s record (723) for most runs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy season.
Although Mumbai lost wickets thereafter, some quick runs by Shivam Dube (27, 24b) and Aman Khan (25; 18b) ensured the team posted 322.
Karnataka were off to a shaky start when in-form opener Samarth (8) lost his stumps to Dhawal Kulkarni. KV Siddharth (8) hung around for a while before off-spinner Tanush Kotian (2/23), playing only his second List A match, sent him back. Soon, Manish Pandey (1) and Padikkal – who too bettered Mayank’s record, finishing his campaign with 737 runs including four centuries and three half-centuries – fell for the addition of 20 runs.
At 97/4 in the 20th over, Karnataka were still in with a chance with an able middle and lower middle-order. Karun Nair (29), Shreyas (33) and Gowtham (28) failed to convert their starts. Sharath dug deep with his 39-ball-61 (8×4;2×6) but with little support at the other end, his efforts went in vain. For Mumbai, Tushar Deshpande, rookie leggie Prashant Solanki and left-arm spinner Shams Mulani collected two wickets each along with Kotian.
This is the first season since 2016-17 that Karnataka will end their campaign without a Trophy with Ranji Trophy cancelled.
