JAIPUR: There is no stopping Mumbai’s juggernaut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020-21. Having a player for every situation, the star-studded team produced an all-round show to trample Himachal by 200 runs, thus staying unbeaten in the league stage and booking a quarterfinal berth at the SMS Stadium on Monday.
After being reduced to 3/8 in four overs, Mumbai made a tremendous comeback. Their middle-order comprising Suryakumar Yadav (91 off 75 balls), Shardul Thakur (92 off 57 balls) and Aditya Tare (83 off 98 balls), gradually steadied the innings and eventually helped the side race to 321/9.
Later, Mumbai bowlers did not let Himachal breathe easy and Rishi Dhawan’s team crumbled under pressure.
Himachal were bowled out for just 121 in 24.1 overs. Debutant Mohit Awasthe struck in his very first over to clean bowl experienced campaigner Prashant Chopra, while Ravi Thakur and Nikhil Gangta’s dismissals by another fast bowler Dhawal Kulkarni in the third over triggered a collapse.
Spinners Prashant Solanki and Shams Mulani joined the party and finished with impressive figures of 5-0-31-4 and 8.1-0-42-3, respectively.
Earlier, Mumbai opener Yashaswi Jaiswal’s poor run continued, while Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer had a rare off day after the side elected to bat first. Yadav joined hands with Tare as he combined caution with aggression to pull Mumbai out of a hole.
The duo stitched a partnership of 99 runs before Yadav’s dismissal in the 31st over. Tare then held one end while letting Thakur to be the aggressor. Tare-Thakur built a 112-run sixth-wicket stand.
Delhi register facile win: Rajasthan came up with their best batting performance in the ongoing tournament, but 295 was never going to be a challenging target for a team like Delhi. Playing at the Jaipuria Vidhyalaya Ground here, Delhi eased past the hosts by eight wickets.
Dhruv Shorey (31 off 47 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (44 off 55 balls) gave Delhi a fine start, but it was centurion Himmat Singh (117 not out off 96 balls) and Nitish Rana (88 not out off 75 balls) who stayed put till the target was overhauled in 44.4 overs.
Shubham Sharma and Shiva Chauhan were the only bowlers to have managed a breakthrough each as Pradeep Sangwan’s outfit made most of the placid batting strip.
Earlier, made to bat first, Manender Singh (73 off 98 balls) and debutant Chauhan (42 off 44 balls) showed fight and later Arjit Gupta’s cameo of 78 from 51 balls gave Rajasthan certain direction. But Ashok Menaria & Co failed to bat their full quota of 50 overs.
