The Eden Reds secured the first division cricket premiership on Sunday in stunning style with a 190-run advantage. Spectators and players alike agreed it was one of the quickest finishes to a grand final in recent memory with Tathra’s innings brought to a close after just 19 overs at 9/33 at Lawrence Park. In dying light on Saturday with storms rumbling overhead play was brought to a close five overs early with the Eden team already perched on nearly 190 runs. Tathra had gotten a great start when openers Drew and Rahul Mudaliar were dismissed in consecutive overs, but Matthew Bell at three righted the ship for Eden and became a lynchpin in deciding the grand final. Bell batted to 93 runs on Saturday, before being one of the main oppressors with the ball in Tathra’s innings on Sunday. Eden’s Patrick Kearney had a cracking open at the revised 11am start time for the second day, smacking more than 30 runs in the final few overs to bring his total to 50 and Eden’s combined tally to 7/223. Mark Spink had earlier proved handy with the bat, adding 42 to the tally and building a strong partnership with Bell. However it was Tathra’s reply innings that caused a stir with Sunday’s innings wrapped up in under two hours as wickets fell quickly to end the Sea Eagle’s premiership chase. Bell and Neil Baker combined to take a lion’s share of the wickets with Bell saying the visiting Eden team felt confident and dangerous in play. “We really felt capable of taking out a wicket per over,” he said during post-match celebrations. Tathra captain Chris Dwyer fell for a duck to a Bell ball and the innings quickly tumbled from there. Lachlan Trickey fell to a Patrick Kearney catch for a duck off a Neil Baker ball, then soon after Tynan Taylor was done in for a single also off a Baker bowl. Quinn Fletcher-Barrie knocked two before he was dismissed, while a further pair of ducks shared to Bell and Baker left Tathra reeling at 6/6. Lachlan Brennan and Geordie Gibbs almost cleared double digits with both scoring nine runs before their respective dismissals. Meanwhile, Tathra secured the women’s premiership with a Sharna Mitchell half-ton leading the way at Dalmeny. Tathra batted first and scored 6/108 with Dakota Taylor (16) and Nicole Constable (15) helping build a good target. Rachael Kincaid’s 24 was the best for the Pirates, but some worthy bowling from Tathra kept their run rate quieter to finish on 6/88. Bega-Angledale were the under 15s winners over Eden with a trio of bats leading the charge. Ben Deighan-Smith headed up on 48 runs with strong contributions from Rory Deighton (21) and Jasper Kelly (22) on the way to 4/127.
