JAIPUR: Having been bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs80 lakh in the 2018 mega auction, Deepak Chahar felt the amount did not match his actual talent as a player. But on Saturday during the 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru, the seamer’s expectations were fulfilled after CSK bought him back and that too at a whopping sum of Rs 14 crore. He is now the most expensive Indian bowler in the IPL history.
“We are delighted. I spoke to Deepak after the bidding got over and he too was elated. Earlier he did not fetch the amount he should have, but now he has made up for what he missed out on during the previous mega auction. We were expecting this. Deepak has proved himself over the last four years and now his allround worth is also there for everyone to see,” said Rajasthan bowler Deepak’s father Lokendra Singh, who is also his coach.
He added that CSK captain MS Dhoni has a lot of faith in the 29-year-old allrounder, and the family somewhere knew he would be back in the Chennai side. “Someone from the management had told Deepak that they will try their best to have him back, and they did. He also wanted to be with them. So his wish is fulfilled,” Lokendra Singh added.
Deepak’s cousin brother Rahul Chahar has been roped in by Punjab Kings at 5.25 crore. “After the auction, the Chahar household is the richest of all,” joked Deepak’s father, who is also Rahul’s coach.
Deepak’s fiancée Jaya Bhardwaj shared that she was on FaceTime call with him the whole day. “Since Deepak is travelling, we also did a family conference call to wish him and celebrate the moment with him. It feels amazing and I am proud of him. I have seen his hard work and he deserves everything good. CSK is very very special to both of us,” Jaya said.
The Rajasthan fast bowler is currently with the Indian team which will next play T20Is against the West Indies in Kolkata from February 16.
