Cricket 2021: India vs England T20 series, Virat Kohli vs Jos Buttler, what was said?, punishment, score, highlights, video

Virat Kohli could risk a ban after being caught up in a heated exchange with Jos Buttler after the latter was dismissed in India’s series-deciding win.

Kohli and Rohit Sharma powered India to their best ever Twenty20 score against England as they clinched the series 3-2 with a convincing 36-run win on Saturday.

India captain Kohli hit an unbeaten 80 and shared an opening stand of 94 with Sharma, who made a blistering 64, as India reached 224 for two in an empty stadium in Ahmedabad.

Kohli and Buttler get into it!

England though finished on 188 with Buttler’s knock coming to an end at 52 runs and his dismissal prompted a fiery reaction from Kohli.

The cameras panned to Kohli as Buttler walked off and he said something to the England batsman, although it is unclear what exactly was said.

Buttler continued to walk before turning around and responding, later starting to move towards Kohli as they engaged in a verbal stoush before he eventually left the field.

Kohli then had a lengthy talk with Jonny Bairstow and the umpires soon after.

Kohli came under scrutiny for arguing with the on-field umpire in the second Test against England but escaped punishment then.

The stoush with Buttler though could leave Kohli in hot water given it could lead to a charge under the ICC’s code of conduct, with article 2.5, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his dismissal during an international match.”

Kohli has two active demerit points and if he reaches four within a 24-month period those points are converted into suspension points.

Two suspension points are equivalent to a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is.

While Kohli may have a potential headache in waiting to see whether he is charged, he won’t be too focused on it given India’s stellar display against England.

Kohli said the result showed what India, just behind top-ranked England in the world T20 international rankings, can do when they are “firing”.

“I think it was a complete game for us, totally outplayed the opposition even with so much dew coming in,” said Kohli.

England captain Eoin Morgan admitted: “India outplayed us in the big moments of the game.”
