Jessica Nery Plata kept fighting for the WBA interim junior flyweight title. On March 11, she ended up winning the real thing.
By beating Yesica Yolanda Bopp in a split decision, Plata also ascended into ESPN’s junior flyweight rankings, moving to No. 4 in a division that also saw Kim Clavel won a day after to hold on to her No. 2 spot. The 27-year-old Plata, from Mexico, had fought her last two fights at flyweight before dropping down for the title fight.
Clavel will face Yesenia Gomez for the WBC title on April 21.
Bopp, who has now lost two of her last three fights, stays in the rankings at No. 5.
Next weekend, Estelle Yoka Mossely, ranked No. 3 at lightweight behind Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, fights Yanina del Carmen Lescano on Friday in Dubai, and Debora Anahi Lopez, ranked No. 4 at flyweight is scheduled to defend her WBO title against Tamara Elisabet Demarco on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and quality of opponent. As with almost everything until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in two years and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
