Working hours: Full-time – Such hours as necessary to carry out your duties. This will involve a minimum of 35.5 hours per week and may include working outside normal office hours at evenings and weekends and on Public Holidays.

ROLE SUMMARY

Badminton England is the National Governing Body for the sport in England. It is also the lead home nation charged with the delivery of the Great Britain World Class Performance Programme, whose main objective is to achieve Olympic Games, Paralympic and World Championship medal success.

As a consequence, Badminton England is responsible for the strategic management, day to day operation and delivery of the following programmes:

GB World Class Programme (“GB WCP”)

The GB World Class Programme incorporates players from the Home Countries with the potential to achieve medal success at future Olympic and Paralympic Games. Currently, separate Olympic and Paralympic programmes are run in Milton Keynes and Sheffield respectively.

England Performance & Junior Performance Programmes (“EPP” & “EJP”)

Badminton England’s Performance Team manage and co-ordinate support for the England Performance players and England Junior Performance players. These programmes underpin and act as a feeder system to the GB programme.

The Performance Director is responsible for the overall strategic delivery of the England Performance Programme and GB World Class Programme and attainment of strategic goals.

MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES

The Performance Director is responsible for the overall strategic delivery of the England Performance Programme and GB World Class Programme and attainment of strategic goals.

This will include:

  • To lead, manage, monitor and report on the GB WCP and EPP/EJP
  • To deliver the aims and goals of a World Class Performance Plan for the period culminating at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, including European, Commonwealth and World Championships, in line with targets agreed with UK Sport.
  • To develop and co-ordinate strategic plans together with the constituent discipline governing bodies for performance and excellence throughout the plan period and beyond.
  • To influence the Badminton England talent development programmes which focus on developing future Olympic medal winning potential.

Performance Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of performance strategy, quadrennial and annual planning with the SLT, and report regularly on progress against objectives to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Board
  • Lead change by creating and driving a World Class environment and culture in each discipline, through the building of strong relationships with all stakeholders including technical, management & administrative staff, personal coaches, athletes, and expert support personnel
  • Work closely with the coaches in each discipline (and across the programmes) to set challenging but realistic targets and establish the operational plan and resources necessary to meet the agreed targets. This will include, but not limited to:
      • The model of preparation and competition
      • Squad structures
      • Selection standards
      • Selection policies for squads and events
      • Performer reviews
      • Activity plans for competitions, control events etc.
  • Ensure best practice approaches to player selection and de-selection and individualised planning and reviewing are in place throughout the pathway
  • Harness the expertise within a multi-disciplinary team including coaches and support staff. Have strategic responsibility for the personal development programmes of all staff involved with the World Class Programmes
  • Devise, lead and direct an expert and innovative sports science & medicine support structure to enhance selected athlete’s performances
  • To provide strategic leadership and oversee the management of the organisation of the training for the players allocated training at the National Badminton Centre
  • To provide strategic leadership and oversee the management of the organisation of the training for the players allocated training at the High-Performance Centres

Organisational Leadership

  • Be responsible for the recruitment and management of all programme staff for both the GB WCP and EPP & EJP, including implementing the relevant Badminton England employee policies and performance management systems
  • Be responsible for the creation of a world-class plan for the programmes and their subsequent delivery. Implement the agreed recommendations from the Walk the Floor review
  • In line with the funding available, establish the budget for each discipline and for generic areas of the programme. The PD has overall responsibility for ensuring that expenditure does not exceed budget and working with the Director of Performance Operations on the production of the necessary financial reports required by Badminton England and UK Sport
  • Establish robust tools for monitoring the effectiveness of all aspects of the programme
  • Work closely with and manage the programme administration team, ensure the creation of effective logistical processes to ensure the effective management of the programme in all areas

Relationship Management

  • Be prominent on the World stage to ensure that good relationships with the International Federation (Badminton World Federation) and other national Federations are achieved in support of the programme goals
  • Attend Badminton GB Ltd Board and Badminton England Board, where required, to agree the World Class Programme strategy
  • Represent Badminton England and Team GB on all appropriate media matters relating to the Performance programme

Other Duties

  • To undertake other duties from time to time as reasonably required by the Chief Executive
  • Lead the relevant staff appointed to the Olympic Games environment

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE
Qualifications

Has significant experience in elite-level international badminton.

 

 A degree and/or other relevant qualification(s) in sports coaching, management, or sport science.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Has demonstrated success as a leader in an elite badminton programme at Olympic / Paralympic and World level.
  • Highly developed strategic leadership skills including planning, problem solving and decision-making.
  • Has a comprehensive understanding of the high-performance environment, including coaching, sports science & medicine, international competition, and badminton development pathways.
  • Has strong evidence of creating and managing multi-disciplinary teams to create a strong impact
  • Has strong experience of creating a positive culture in a performance environment
  • Have a strong understanding of coaching and the development pathway for the game of badminton
  • Have a demonstrable track record in applied sports science.
  • First-hand experience as a coach or team manager of international sports competitions, such as the Olympic Games and the World Championships.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage performance groups in high stress sports situations.
