Badminton England has welcomed confirmation of funding for World Class Programmes through to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The indicative UK Sport funding for the Paris cycle, announced in December 2020, has now been confirmed for all sports with badminton’s WCPs set to receive £3,154,358 – a rise from £665,100 in the Tokyo cycle – and para-badminton allocated £1,106,833
This will allow us to rebuild a WCP in line with UK Sport’s standards and will be critical to provide the fully supportive programme athletes need, as highlighted by the draft findings of the Culture Health Check.
Badminton England Head Coach Peter Jeffrey said: “The confirmed rise in funding from UK Sport is obviously extremely welcome for our team and the sport in this country.
“This increase from the Tokyo cycle will give us the best chance of achieving success and medals.
“It is a significant boost for, not only the players, but the coaches and everyone who works hard behind the scenes.
“In terms of the additional funding’s practical use, this will make a big difference to our sports science teams and help our athletes be even more prepared throughout the next Olympic cycle.”
“At the elite level additional support and resources genuinely makes a big difference to player performance. For the wider team this is thoroughly excellent news.”
Across wider sports – UK Sport is allocating an additional £11.2m of funding into summer Olympic and Paralympic sport to support preparation for the next Games in three years’ time.
It is hoped this extra financial support will help top-class players not only ahead of, and in, Paris but also strengthen the pathway of young athletes targeting success at the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
