Seacoast High School Sports Awards nominees 2021

Six high school girl golfers are in the running to be named best on the Seacoast.

The nominees have been chosen and one winner will be be named at the Seacoast High School Sports Awards, a virtual event to be held this year on Tuesday, July 6.

The celebrity guest presenters for the 2021 show are scheduled to be announced on Sunday. Last year’s show featured Bill Belichick, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Steph Curry, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Phelps, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Keli Smith-Puzo, Gary Woodland, Rose Lavelle, Misty May-Treanor and Jordan Burroughs.

Athletes will be honored from fall, winter and spring sports again in 2021.

Honorees should register at sportsawards.usatoday.com/seacoast to reserve their complimentary athlete gift box, which is scheduled to arrive approximately one week prior to the show. Registrations are also used to send out awards for winners following the show. Boys golf: Meet the six nominees for Seacoast High School Sports Awards

The Seacoast High School Sports Awards, formerly known as Seacoast All Stars Sports Awards, is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.

The nominees for high school girls golf include St. Thomas Aquinas’ Nicole Butkus, Lindsey Butkus, Mae Cove-Hamel and Serena Gerome, Oyster River’s Delaney Nadeau and Winnacunnet’s June Doerr.

Here’s a look at each of their accomplishments:

June Doerr

Winnacunnet, freshman

Doerr had a scoring average of 38 and held the top position this season for Winnacunnet.

Doerr shot an 80 and placed second at the New Hampshire girls individual state championship, just two shots behind Pinkerton Academy sophomore Julianna Megan.

“As a coach, I am super proud of June,” Winnacunnet coach Pat Snow said after the championship match. “Her work ethic was on full display throughout her round. It was up there with the best I’ve seen her hit the ball. She had a fearless, hard-fought round, and represented Winnacunnet well. She has a bright future ahead of her.”

Nicole Butkus

St. Thomas Aquinas, senior

Butkus was the No. 3 player for the Saints this past season, posting an average score of 44. This was all done while she also was a member of the St. Thomas girls cross country team.

Butkus, a high honor roll student, was a Division II honorable mention selection.

“Somehow she managed to make every golf match and cross country meet while attaining high honors,” St. Thomas Aquinas head coach BobMerwin said. “That’s quite a feat. She was a very consistent and dependable player for us.”

Lindsey Butkus

St. Thomas Aquinas, freshman

Butkus played at the No. 2 spot for the Saints this past season. She adjusted to the high school game and had an average of 42.

Butkus, a high honor roll student, was a Division II honorable mention selection and

“Lindsay was a freshman who got better and better each week,” Merwin said. “She will be a top player in New Hampshire golf for the next three years. She hits it far and has a very credible short game.”

Margaret Mae Cove Hamel

St. Thomas Aquinas, junior

Cove-Hamel, a high honor roll student, made the St. Thomas Aquinas varsity squad for the first time as a junior and posted an average score of 48.

“She just started to hit her potential this year,” Merwin said. “She’s a long hitter who took big strides this year, and someone who will be counted on heavily as a senior.”

Serena Gerome

St. Thomas Aquinas, senior

Gerome was the top player for the Saints entering every match this past season. She finished the year with an average score of 43 and earned Division II all-state second team honors.

“Serena showed great leadership qualities as the captain of a very young team,” St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Bob Merwin said. “She consistently played against the top player from other schools and will be missed greatly.”

Delaney Nadeau

Oyster River, freshman

Nadeau routinely shot between 41 and 43 with the Oyster River boys team this past fall, placing in the top five on two occasions.

“From the first day, I saw the way she approached the game and how diligent she was,” Oyster River head coach Paul Bamford said. “She let her game speak for herself. She has incredible work ethic, and has a great way about her. She has a quiet confidence and she will be one of the top players in the state by the time she is a senior.”

Nadeau’s highlight match, according to Bamford, came at Pembroke Country Club. She was “average” on the front nine, and responded with three birdies and six pars on the back.

“She ended up showing her mental toughness in that match,” Bamford said. “She has it. She has the poise and the determination.”
