Stefanos Tsitsipas showed no mercy on John Isner on Wednesday. The Greek was shrewd and in control from start to finish as he raced to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph in fifty-eight minutes to book a quarterfinal clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime on his Acapulco debut.
Auger-Aliassime also reached his first quarterfinal in Acapulco with a 6-3, 6-4 win over American wild card Sebastian Korda.
Tsitsipas hardly put a foot wrong in his fifth career contest against Isner. He didn’t make an unforced error from the baseline until the fourth game of the second set and he never faced a break point while simultaneously routinely breaking Isner a total of three times.
It was a virtually flawless display from the Greek, who improves to 12-3 in 2021 and reaches his fourth quarterfinal of the season.
Tsitsipas cracked 23 winners against just three unforced errors, and won 36 of 41 points on serve to improve to 3-2 lifetime against Isner. After losing his first two contests to Isner, the Greek has now won his last six sets contested against the 35-year-old American.
“Things worked out pretty well,” said Tsitsipas. “I had good return games today and that was very important. Today I just managed to stay composed and concentrated at all moments.”
Musetti Magic Happens Again
On Tuesday Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti played—and won—his first ever match against a Top 10 player (World No.9 Diego Schwartzman), and won his first ATP hard court match to boot. The 19-year-old qualifier still had something left in the tank for Wednesday, however, and he emptied the tank again for a thrilling 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(1) victory over Frances Tiafoe.
Musetti rallied from 3-0 down in a wild third set, then served for the match at 6-5 before faltering. But the tiebreaker was an all Italian affair. Musetti, playing in just his fourth ATP level event, won the first six points before locking up the victory.
Check out how it went down below:
