Up and Coming Women’s Sporting Events in 2022
2022 is looking like an exciting year for women’s sports. Some of the biggest events ever are taking place, and with popularity growing in many areas, there are more eyes than ever ready to witness some crazy sporting moments. Through this article, we are going to be revealing our top five must-watch spectacles in the world of women’s sport.
The Rugby World Cup
Going into the women’s Rugby World Cup, England is a firm favorite. Taking place from the 8th till the 12th of October in New Zealand, the Red Roses have a great run of form. They have won 18 tests in a row with back-to-back victories against world champions New Zealand this year. In 2021 they scored 57 tries and only conceded 10.
Eleven teams have qualified so far including the hosts New Zealand. They are the most successful team with five titles to their record, but the rivalry and revenge against England will be a big moment for them and a win they are extremely hungry for. South Africa, Fiji, Italy, France, Japan, Australia, England, Wales, and the United States are the other teams in the running with qualifiers still waiting to be played confirming the complete roster.
The Ashes
The women’s Ashes took place earlier this year with Australia taking a seemingly easy win winning the entire series with a game to spare. England offered a good contest throughout the competition but was finally beaten at Melbourne’s Junction Oval. This was Australia’s first home Ashes win in this multi-format style, combining 50-over, 20-over, and Test cricket together.
Golf Majors
The venues for the 2022 Women’s Golf Major Championship have been revealed by LPGA. Golf has always been a male-dominated sport, but things look to be changing. The women’s golf scene in the US has started gaining more and more traction with amazing players gaining traction across the world stage. When it comes to money in the sport, and the amount of competitions, golf is still dominated by men but the countless efforts of LPGA is taking the sport to new levels.
Euro 2022
The women’s Euro 2022 competition is looking to be a feisty competition. England are wanting to go one step further than the men’s team, taking victory in a Wembley final. The entire tournament is taking place in England across ten stadiums around the country. The competition will be played through July, starting on the 6th and ending on the 31st. England is one of the bookie’s favorites hoping to clinch their first-ever European title.
The defending champions, The Netherlands, are looking to make it another tournament win but the competition is tough, with Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, and Norway all looking strong. A surprise upset could come from the other teams competing with Northern Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Russia, Italy, Austria, and Iceland, all looking to take home the glory.
Rugby League World Cup
The Rugby League World Cup is a special event this year, with 3 areas of the tournament running side by side, the men, women, and wheelchair tournaments. The eight qualifying women teams are split into two groups with hosts England seeing Canada, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea in group A, and Australia, France, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands in group B.
Matches will take place in a variety of different stadiums across the north of England from November 1st until the 19th. Australia is the dominant force in women’s rugby league with 11 titles under its belt. In 2017 they reached this amazing milestone defeating England in the final. This was Australia’s 14th consecutive national final.
Cricket World Cup
2022 has seen both the men’s and the Women’s world cup cricket tournaments take place. Running from the 4th of March till April 3rd, the event took place in New Zealand, similar to the Rugby World Cup. Eight teams took place overall including defending champions England, South Africa, and Australia.
The tournament was played in a round-robin style with the best four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. The previous tournament took place in England in 2017, with the hosts taking victory over India to secure their fourth world title, but this year it was Australia who took home the trophy.
