International Women’s Day 2022 provides a chance to reflect on the successes of women in our sport and consider the work we can do to #breakthebias moving forward.
We are fortunate to have seen 15 Victorian women represent Australia at the Olympics and the Paralympics – from Race Walkers, Runners, Rollers, Jumpers and Throwers to Cross-Country and Marathoners. These female and non-binary athletes have shone on the world stage. And for us (and we hope for you too), these individuals are role models who have excelled in their events.
We would also like to acknowledge the many women (cis, non-binary and trans) who help keep our sport running day-to-day. Our community-based competitors, who love to turn up and have a go, our target talent young people, and of course, the outstanding female, non-binary and trans individuals who volunteer and officiate our sport every weekend. Our sport would not run without you all, so we say thank you. You should all be proud of who you are; you are shaping and changing sport every day – just by showing up and having a go (at whatever it is you do).
Together, you are changing the narrative – making the next generation see that you can do anything you put your mind to, no matter your age, skill level, or goals.
