BUENOS AIRES, March 9 (Xinhua) — Manchester City-bound forward Julian Alvarez continued his prolific scoring form as River Plate cruised to a 5-0 win over Laferrere in their Copa Argentina opener on Wednesday.
Alvarez struck with a header just after the half-hour mark following Ezequiel Barco’s cross at the Ernesto Martearena stadium in the northern city of Salta.
Bruno Zuculini, Juan Fernando Quintero, Marcelo Herrera, and Jose Paradela were also on the scoresheet for River.
Alvarez has now netted four times in five appearances across all competitions this season following a breakthrough 2021 campaign in which he struck 24 goals in 46 outings.
In February, Manchester City agreed to pay an initial 14 million British pounds to secure the 22-year-old on a contract that runs until 2027. The Argentina international will remain at River on loan until at least July.
In Monday’s only other Copa Argentina fixture, Argentinos Juniors overcame Olimpo 2-0.
