Manchester United are back into the top four following a 2-0 victory over ten-man Brighton in a Premier League match staged at Old Trafford.
David de Gea was forced into an early save following Fred’s sloppy pass that allowed Mac Allister onto the ball before playing in Moder. The forward sent in down the right of the area but his it on the angle was pushed away by De Gea before Lindelof hacked the ball clear.
United responded well as Webster failed to keep the ball under his control allowing Ronaldo through. He laid it off to Sancho down the left but his effort was well saved by Sanchez on a tight angle.
Moder tested de Gea for the second time in the first half but the Spaniard made a sensational save. Gross sent in a superb cross and Moder was up to send a bullet header goalwards. But the United goalkeeper leapt to his right to palm it behind for a corner.
Ronaldo goal
Ronaldo finally ended his goalless run with a superb finish to give United the lead. It was his first goal in seven matches and he finishes it with real verve. Bissouma was crowded out in midfield by McTominay and Fernandes, and his loose pass fell straight to Ronaldo. He stood up to Webster, dinking past him before sending a thunderous effort past Sanchez.
Red card
United were causing lots of trouble to Brighton’s backline and were through again but the move was stopped as Dunk pulled Elanga down. It was a freekick but the referee was surrounded as the home players called for a red card. The centre referee Peter Bankes issued a yellow card but was over to the pitchside monitor on VAR’s recommendation.
The card was then upgraded to red as Dunk was judged to have denied Elanga a goalscoring opportunity. Down by a goal and down to ten me.
Fernandes goal
Fernandes added the second at the death. United won a free-kick, which they took extremely quickly. Bruno was released and drove down the field with a sensational solo run. Brighton were left stranded with almost all of their players camped in the opposition half.
Ronaldo was there for support, but Fernandes did it all himself, with the ball firing into the back of the net via the crossbar.
