For a couple of years now Blackwater Sailing Club has hosted Essex County Fire and Rescue Service swift water and flood rescue training events. We have been entertained many times, watching the firemen practice their moving water rescues.
Sometimes these took place on a lovely sunny day, at other times it has been in the middle of winter. Recently they came to practice rescuing a horse. Fortunately they had a wooden horse to practice with and it was quite an amusing sight; The real situation is a very different story and their practice soon came into good use. Shortly afterwards there were at least two events reported in the local press involving the service in the rescue of horses stuck in ditches. Luckily both had successful outcomes.
We are delighted to report that our first cohort of adult sailing trainees have successfully completed the course. Sailing each week throughout the cold and wet winter months of December and January on a Friday afternoon they are now very proud to have received their RYA Level 1 and 2 certificates. They can now go forward into the coming season with confidence and enjoy all that sailing has to offer. The course has been so successful that it will continue; there is a steady stream of candidates and a waiting list.
The days are getting longer and warmer, Spring is on the way, and our programme for the season is filled.
