After an exciting weekend at the Montreal Sabre Grand Prix, some Canadian junior men’s sabre athletes kept the energy going as they rolled in to Boston for the World Cup. Top individual finish of the weekend was earned by Francois Cauchon (BRE, QC), who finished 7th. In the table of 64, Cauchon faced Germany’s Colin Heathcock, followed by Tariq Karam of the United States in the table of 32. Entering the top 16, Cauchon fenced Italy’s Pietro Torre, who he defeated in a close bout of 15-12. Cauchon fell in the quarter finals to Luca Fioretto of Italy, 15-12.
Cauchon was joined in the top 16 by fellow Canadian Andrew Wei (BRE, QC), who placed 14th, was victorious over Americans Sean Kim (T64) and James Linder (T32). Wei was defeated in the table of 16 against American Mitchell Saron.
As well as the individual finishes, the team of Cauchon, Wei, Shae McFadden (MGB, MB), and Angelo Chiara (BRE, QC) placed 6th in the junior men’s sabre team event. Earning a bye to the quarter finals, the Canadian team fell to the Americans 45-38.
At the World Cup in Zagreb, Croatia, the junior women’s foil team placed 6th overall. Earning a bye to the table of 16, the ladies won in a very close bout of 45-43 over the team of Great Britain. In the following table, the quarter finals, the Italian team bested the Canadians 45-32. The team consisted of Ying Cao (TFC, ON), Jane Caulfield (EFC, AB), Cynthia Liu (OTT, ON), and Tinney Mak (OTT, ON).
