Celebrations in the air as another seven players seized gold bracelets at the 52nd annual World Series of Poker. The newly minted were Brian Rast for his fifth career bracelet, Farzad “Freddy” Bonyadi for bracelet number four, Tommy Le for his second $10K Pot Limit Omaha title, and first-time winners, Anthony Denove, Alexandre Reard, Gershon Distenfeld, and Darrin Wright. In the WSOP Player of the Year race, Anthony Zinno reclaimed the lead over Phil Hellmuth while Jake Schwartz is a very close third rank. Schwartz has also caught up to Hellmuth with the most final tables at five each. We’ve got those stories down below.
With the series into its final half at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino, numbers are expected to rise, especially with the travel ban to be lifted on November 8th. Games kicked off on September 30 and will run through November 23. Plenty of bracelets have yet to be won including the $10,000 Main Event World Championship title which starts in about one week. To date, 51 out of 88 bracelets have been won plus 5 out of 11 at online platform WSOP.com, and over US$ 81 Million paid out in completed events.
Event #43: $1,000 Double Stack NL Hold’em – ANTHONY DENOVE – US$ 446,983
Dream victory for Anthony Denove who outlasted a massive field of 3,991 entries at Event #43: $1,000 DOUBLE STACK No Limit Hold’em to capture the coveted golden bracelet and the lion’s share of US$ 3,551,990. Not only was this Denove’s first WSOP title, it was his first ever career win, and first six figure tournament payout of US$ 446,983.
After two starting flights, 1,064 players advanced to Day 2 with a high number of Asian players in the list, however at the close, only six bagged up, among them was Korean bracelet winner Sejin Park. Falling before time ran out was India’s Dhaval Mudgal in 154th place. Day 3 saw 149 players return led by poker personality Jeff Platt who continued on to Day 4 as one of the final 17 players. Denove sat one spot higher, Park was ranked third, and bracelet winner Michael Wang was at the helm.
First to go was China’s Yin Wu in 17th place leaving Park as the only Asian in contention. However, Park couldn’t handle the heat and fell in 13th place as Denove’s second victim. Denove added another casualty to his black book, railing Alex Kulev in 11th place to carry in the biggest stack into the final table.
Denove’s knockout spree continued, eliminating Matthew Raffoul (10th) and Michael Wang (9th) simultaneously. Guay did some sweeping of his own, cleaning out Kenneth Inouye (7th), Frank Lagodich (5th), Jeff Platt (4th), and Timothy Little (3rd), to face Denove for the title ahead in the count. It was a tug of war as both players battled for that coveted first bracelet. At the final showdown, Denove had the edge and won it with pocket tens over pocket nines.
Among the Asian players in the money were: Sejin Park (13th), Yin Wu (17th), Ivan Zhechev (44th), Hojin Kim (135th), Yuhei Sanada (141st), Guifang liu (146th), Dhaval Mudgal (154th), Katsuhiro Mori (193rd), Katsun Luk (194th), Sungwoon Park (259th), Kenji Hamamoto (274th), Jun Obara (300th), Masato Yokosawa (302nd), Motoyoshi Okamura (312th), Aoi Oyama (325th), Shohei Miyazaki (346th), Akitoshi Okuda (352nd), Takashi Matsushita (379th), Kitty Kuo (402nd), Yuka Asaka (427th), Kazuki Ikeuchi (428th), Soo Jo Kim (437th), Ting Yi Tsai (438th), Seungyeol Kim (439th), Neel Joshi (446th), and Jiyoung Kim (535th).

Event #45: $10,000 PLO Championship 8-Handed – TOMMY LE – US$ 746,477
One day after falling in second place to Josh Arieh at Event #39: $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha 8-hande, PLO specialist Tommy Le jumped in the more expensive Event #45: $10,000 PLO 8-Handed Championship, and shipped it for his second career bracelet. In fact, Le won his first bracelet in this same event back in 2017. Along with the gold, he pocketed a handsome US$ 746,477, boosting his total career earnings to US$ 4 Million.
Taking a look at Le’s overall WSOP performance, out of 23 cashes, fifteen were at PLO events, nine of them were final tables. To capture his latest victory, Le overcame a 344 entry field that included heavyweights such as Stephen Chidwick, Jc Tran, Mike Matusow, and 2019 WSOP POY winner Robert Campbell. A few bracelet winners also reached the final table, namely 1x winner Anderson Ireland (9th), 4x winner Eli Elezra who was on his second final table, and 2x winner Jeremy Ausmus who won Event #3: $1,000 Covid-19 NLH Charity Relief.
Le squared off against Jordan Spurlin at heads up. Like Le, Spurlin was an avid PLO player with four cashes in this series, all PLO, before reaching heads up. Spurlin opened with the lead, but once Le overturned it, he couldn’t catch up. Le shaved down Spurlin to land his second gold bracelet.

Event #47: $5,000 Freezeout NLH 8-Handed – ALEXANDRE REARD – US$ 428,694
421 players ponied up the $5,000 buy in of the Freezeout No Limit Hold’em 8-Handed event to generate a prize pool of US$ 1,941,863. The top 64 players turned a profit with French pro Alexandre Reard claiming the largest cut of US$ 428,694 and his first career bracelet. Reard became the first player from France to win in this series.
Taking a look at his prior WSOP achievements, Reard first cashed at the series in 2015, but instead of bracelets, he found success at two WSOP circuit events in France for two gold rings. At other events, while most of his big wins were on home court, he also has high roller titles at WPTDeepStacks Brussels and at EPT Prague National. He currently has over US$ 3.4 Million on tracked live earnings.
The freezeout event saw 82 players return for Day 2 with the money just 18 spots away. During hand for hand, Reard was in the hot seat against Raul Manzanares who pushed on the river. Reard opted to fold and save his chips. Once the money flowed, bust outs were rampant. Among them were 3x winner Scott Seiver (17th), Jongwook Lee (26th), 2x winner Daniel Lazrus (27th), 6x winner Daniel Negreanu (32nd), and 4x winner Shaun Deeb (33rd). Italian pro Dario Sammartino busted 10th, just missing the final table.
The final race for the gold kicked off with bracelet winner Daniel Strelitz as chip leader. The only other decorated players were bracelet winner Diogo Veiga and ring winner Conrad Simpson. Veiga exited 7th, Simpson out 4th, and Strelitz faced Reard at heads up. Both were fairly even at the get-go. When Reard won the first big pot, he amassed a 2:1 advantage which Strelitz could not overcome.

Event #48: $1,500 Shootout NL Hold’em – GERSHON DISTENFELD – US$ 204,063
Last year, Gershon Distenfeld found himself at the final table of the $10,000 Main Event World Championship [USA], the furthest he has ever reached at the series, ending in a commendable 8th place. Returning to the scene this year, Distenfeld took on the $1,500 SHOOTOUT No Limit Hold’em, joining 799 other players. After three days of “must win” tables, the dream victory was captured to lock up the coveted dream bracelet and a career high score of US$ 204,063. With no prior wins tracked, this may well have been Distenfeld’s first ever victory.
The three day event attracted many Asian players however only three – Reiji Kono (24th), Hwany Lee (66th), and bracelet winner Sean Yu (73rd) – won their first round tables to earn a piece of the US$ 1,068,000 prize pool. At the final table were two decorated players, 2x bracelet winner Ari Engel and 2x ring winner Craig Trost. Trost fell 10th, Engel finished 7th, and the battle for the gold came between Distenfeld and Johan Schumacher who was on his second final table. Schumacher opened with a 2:1 advantage, one double up switched them up, and from there it was a tug of war for control. After three hours of heated exchanges, Distenfeld prevailed to lock up the win and his first gold bracelet.

Event #49: $10,000 NL 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship – FARZAD “Freddy” BONYADI- US$ 297,051
Another big buy in event brought out the big guns and emerging victorious was Iranian born Farzad “Freddy” Bonyadi to clinch his fourth career bracelet. Bonyadi bested a field of 122 at Event #49: $10,000 NL 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship, defeating bracelet winner Johannes Becker at heads up. Along with the shine, he pocketed the US$ 297,051 first place purse to boost his career earnings to over US$ 4.5 Million.
Bonyadi has been attending the annual series since 1998. He won his first bracelet that year at the $2,000 Limit Hold’em event. Six years later, he locked up his second gold at the 2004 $1,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball, then his third the following year at the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em event. Since then, his hunt for the next gold earned him several final tables, mostly at 2-7 Lowball variant, which he was finally able to close out in this series. Aside from the WSOP, Bonyadi collected his largest career score of US$ 1,061,900 for runner up at the 2011 Ninth Annual Five Star WPT Championship $25,500 No Limit Hold’em.
Leading up to his latest victory, two time series winner Anthony Zinno was eliminated in 10th place and Shawn Sheikhan in 9th to form the final table. First to leave was 6x bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu in 8th place. This was Negreanu’s second final table and second 8th place finish. Bracelet winner Julien Martini was grounded in 6th place. Out in fifth was the hot running Jake Schwartz who was on his fifth final table, matching up to Phil Hellmuth with the most final tables in this series. 3x winner Benny Glaser was on his third final table and still couldn’t take it all the way, falling in 3rd place. At heads up, Bonyadi entered in command and held it firmly to the end for his fourth gold bracelet and second 2-7 Lowball career title.

Event #50: $600 Mixed NLH/PLO Deepstack 8-Handed – DARRIN WRIGHT- US$ 127,219
Rarely do we see everyone at the final table vying for their first dream bracelet however that was the case at Event #50: $600 Mixed NLH/PLO Deepstack 8-Handed. In the end, Darrin Wright claimed ownership along with the US$ 127,219 first prize. Wright crushed the final table, knocking out a majority of his opponents to secure his first ever victory.
The two day event attracted 1,569 entries for a prize pool of US$ 800,190. Among the crowd goers were many well known Asian players however only six reached the money round which included series bracelet winner Kazuki Ikeuchi in 155th place and Korean pro Soo Jo Kim in 164th place. Running the deepest was India’s Vidur Sethi who missed the final table by two spots in 11th place.
The final table was led in by Hanan Braun while Wright was wedged in the middle. Wright took a few early hits then picked up pace, scooping up big pots to eventually take the lead. With his beefed up stack, he booted numerous players starting with Erik Eberts (9th) followed by John Gilchrist (7th), Ryan Colton (6th), Braun (5th), and Joshua Ray (3rd). Heads up against Victor Paredes proved to be more challenging but Wright kept his lead intact to close it out under Pot Limit Omaha variant.

Event #51: $3,000 6-Handed NL Hold’em – BRIAN RAST – US$ 474,102
Brian Rast secured his fifth career bracelet and a pocketful US$ 474,102 at Event #51: $3,000 6-Handed NL Hold’em. He topped a field of 997 entries, defeating quadruple ring holder John Gallaher at heads up.
Looking back at Rast’s previous series accomplishments, his biggest year was in 2011 when he won his first two bracelets. The first one was at the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em event for US$ 227,232, then followed it up with the $50K Poker Player’s Championship for a whopping US$ 1,720.328 payout. In 2016, he stunned the world with another $50K Poker Player’s Championship victory, earning his third gold bracelet and a larger US$ 1,296,097 payday. Two years later, his fourth gold came at the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship along with US$ 259,670. With his latest win, Rast has accumulated over US$ 6.5 Million in series earnings. Apart from the WSOP, he has amassed an even larger collection of deep runs. His biggest takedown was at the 2015 Super High Roller Bowl $500K No Limit Hold’em event for a staggering US$ 7,525,000.
The 6-Handed NLH event was a two day affair with the 997 field cut down to just 41 players at the end of Day 1. Japanese pro Jun Obara bagged the chip lead and eventually reached the final table for his fifth series cash and deepest run of 5th place. Other Asians earning a piece of the US$ 2,661,990 prize pool were bracelet winner Sejin Park (31st), Steve Yea (60th), Ting Yi “Eric” Tsai (81st), Sunny Jung (82nd), Tamon Nakamura (87th), Reiji Kono (126th), and Neel Joshi (141st).
Kicking off the final table, Rast was the man in charge, a position he held throughout. He was also the only WSOP decorated player in the round. He axed Francisco Benitez (6th), Nick Yunis (4th), and Tuan Phan (3rd) to carry a near 7:1 advantage at heads up against John Gallaher. It was no contest. Rast quickly finished him off to clasp his fifth golden bling.
