Brighton have been admirable in their approach this season, but they have been naive tonight. They have afforded the visitors too much space in the final third and have paid the price. Their only hope looks to be keeping the scoreline respectable in the second half, bar a miracle comeback.

Manchester City have enjoyed a dominant first half in their Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion, taking a 3-0 lead into the break. Ilkay Gundogan put the visitors ahead with a close-range finish after Robert Sanchez dropped the ball in the box. Phil Foden then scored a brace to put City in command, firing home on the slide and then diverting a strike from Gabriel Jesus into the back of the net.

42′ Rodri loses out to March, who feeds Moder in space, but the winger fails to beat Dias with his strike.

39′ Brighton have earned plaudits for their performances this season. However, they have been too open against City this evening and have paid the price. Guardiola will feel that the game is done and dusted here.

37′ After taking credit for deflecting Jesus’ strike past Sanchez, Foden has now scored the second brace of his career. His first came against Burnley in 2020.

35′ Brighton have space down the left flank and Cucurella floats a cross into the box towards Trossard. Rodri acts to divert it away from the Belgian and behind for a corner.

Manchester City

31′ GOAL!!! FODEN DEFLECTS JESUS’ STRIKE HOME !!! 3-0 CITY!! The visitors take complete control as Jesus’ strike deflects off Foden and beats Sanchez, although the keeper should save it. Jesus starts the incisive break into the box as he finds Grealish in space. Sanchez blocks the effort of the England man, but Jesus pounces on the rebound. He steers a left-footed effort towards goal that deflects off Foden and even though Sanchez gets a hand to it, he cannot prevent the ball finding the left corner. Another poor moment from the Spaniard.

Manchester City

28′ GOAL!!! FODEN SCORES AFTER A RAPID BREAK!!! 2-0 CITY!!!! The visitors notch a second goal through a brilliant counter that Foden finishes on his left boot. Cucurella gives the ball away in midfield and it allows Silva to release Grealish down the left flank. He bursts forward into the box before spotting the run of Foden. The England man produces a fine cutback for his team-mate to finish on the slide under duress from Burn.

Manchester City

26′ City attempt to build down the right flank as Silva tries to force a pass through for Foden. However, it just evades the forward and travels through to Sanchez.

24′ Only Mohamed Salah (16) and Harry Kane (15) have scored more Premier League goals in 2021 than Gundogan (13).

Manchester City

22′ Walker clips the ankles of Cucurella with a late challenge and goes into the book.

20′ CHANCE! City cut open the Brighton defence once more as Foden spreads the ball to Grealish. He sees his shot repelled, but the rebound falls to Jesus. The Brazilian fires a crisp left-footed effort towards goal, only to be denied by a sharp save from Sanchez. The Spaniard may have just redeemed himself for his earlier mistake.

19′ SAVE! Grealish releases Foden through on goal down the left-inside channel. The forward does take a poor first touch and it allows Sanchez to race out and knock it away before gathering the rebound ahead of Grealish.

17′ WIDE! Trossard turns in the box but fires wide of the left post. Gross does well down the right flank and sends a dangerous cross into the box. Trossard and Maupay both go for the ball, but the Belgian gets there first. He finds space to turn, although he fails to provide the quality finish required.

15′ Lallana loses out in the middle of the park to Gundogan, but the German’s attempt to spread a pass out wide to Grealish in space travels out for a throw-in.

Manchester City

13′ Silva reacts to a mistake from Sanchez and hooks the ball towards goal. Gundogan reacts and converts from close range.

Manchester City

13′ GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! GUNDOGAN CONVERTS FROM CLOSE RANGE! 1-0 CITY!! Sanchez commits a howler at the back as drops a deflected strike from Foden. Silva hooks it into the path of Gundogan, who bundles the ball home from six yards into an empty net. Not a great moment for the Brighton keeper.

11′ WHAT A CLEARANCE OFF THE LINE! Dunk denies Jesus with a brilliant acrobatic kick off the line. City cut open the hosts down the right-inside channel and Jesus takes possession. He finds the angle to drill a low strike towards goal, and although Sanchez gets a touch it appears destined for the net. However, Dunk acts on the line to prevent the Brazilian breaking the deadlock.

8′ Rodri gets the flick-on at the near post from the resulting corner from Gundogan, but Sanchez comes through a crowd to claim the ball.

7′ SAVE! Cancelo fires low and hard towards the bottom-left corner after collecting a cutback from Grealish. It takes a deflection off March, but Sanchez reacts to turn it behind for a corner.

5′ The Seagulls clear their lines from the City free-kick. Brighton cannot afford to lose the battle at set-pieces tonight.

4′ Dunk and Foden compete for the ball down the left flank, but the City man goes down under pressure from the defender and wins a free-kick.

3′ Brighton are enjoying an early spell of possession. City are not used to starting a contest without the ball.

1′ We’re under way at the Amex Stadium.

Having lost their first seven Premier League games against Manchester City by an aggregate score of 21-2, Brighton came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in their last such meeting in May.

City have made two changes to their side that beat Club Brugge during the week. Jesus slots into the final third in place of Mahrez, who drops to the bench. De Bruyne is also rested from the start as Gundogan returns to the fold in the middle of the park.

Brighton have made one change to their side that drew against Norwich last time out. Duffy comes out of the line-up and drops to the bench as March comes in to start on the left flank. The Seagulls are expected to line up with a 4-4-2 formation, but March could be pushed further forward to support Trossard and Maupay.

MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: John Stones, Nathan Ake, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Zack Steffen, Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez, Samuel Edozie, Cole Palmer.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Joao Cancelo; Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan; Gabriel Jesus, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden.

BRIGHTON SUBS: Tariq Lamptey, Adam Webster, Aaron Connolly, Yves Bissouma, Alexis Mac Allister, Enock Mwepu, Jason Steele, Shane Duffy, Taylor Richards.

BRIGHTON (4-4-2): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk, Dan Burn, Marc Cucurella; Pascal Gross, Jakub Moder, Adam Lallana, Solly March; Leandro Trossard, Neal Maupay.

City were clinical during the week in the Champions League, beating Club Brugge 5-1 on the road. It backed up their efforts in the Premier League after seeing off Burnley 2-0 on home soil last week. Pep Guardiola’s men will need to maintain their edge in the final third as the Seagulls have been difficult to break down. City cannot afford to fall further behind Chelsea at the top of the table.

Brighton have drawn their last three matches on the bounce in the Premier League, but are unbeaten in their last five. Graham Potter’s men have punched above their weight in the top flight this term and sit in fourth place ahead of kick-off. The Seagulls have been accused of lacking a cutting edge, which has affected their ability to kill off opponents of late. They have to be ruthless tonight against the champions.

Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester City at the Amex Stadium.
