Thomas Tuchel has been speaking to the press this lunchtime ahead of another big Champions League match at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.
The Blues face Malmo in a game they are expected to win. However, after a scare against Brentford at the weekend and some poor form attacking wise from Chelsea in recent games, perhaps makes a lot of us fans not quite so confident as we have been.
Tuchel has even admitted to some issues in attack, and you can read every word he said today over at Si & Dan Talk Chelsea.
There were some interesting comments on a potential formation and system change..
“Yes, yes and no,” Tuchel replied on whether he could look to change formations.
“We are always thinking about it, but is it really a tactical thing? Does it have less value being a tough team to play against? Of course we can take this step to put more offensive players but it is about balance and we found the balance and the main point is we stay active no matter what structure we play and the guys help each other on the field. We can create chances in any kind of structure. There are a lot of reasons why we stay in this structure. We must stay active and aggressive. It’s not only about creating chances against opponents playing deep and most teams are playing deep. We are looking for solutions and one solution could be changing formations, we will see.”
So it certainly sounds like they are contemplating a potential switch, and that would naturally mean moving to a four at the back system.
Here are some options we could use for this.
4-3-3 – Mendy, James, Christensen, Rudiger, Chilwell. Jorginho, Kante, Loftus-Cheek. Mount, Havertz, Lukaku.
4-2-3-1 – Mendy, Azpilicueta, Silva, Chalobah, Chilwell. Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi, Mount, Pulisic, Lukaku.
4-2-2-2 – Mendy, James, Christensen, Silva, Chilwell, Loftus-Cheek, Kante, Mount, Havetrz, Werner, Lukaku.
These players can obviously be changed around here and I’m writing them pretty randomly, the formations are more important. But I think the 4-2-2-2 is one to really keep an eye on as it is one Tuchel has used before and has been practising in training.
It would allow for Lukaku to play up top with Werner which has looked dangerous, but not only that, give them both extra service with two attacking midfielders behind them. Then the two shielding midfielders could drop in and allow the full backs to give Chelsea the wide threat in attack. We would need quick and energetic full backs to achieve this.
I like the 4-3-3 as well, but the 4-2-3-1 also interests me as it allows for a true number 10 in there which would really suit Kai Havertz. It will allow him to be the playmaker and creator, something we have really been missing.
But it also gives the defence protection with the two holding pivot midfielders, whilst also bringing wingers back to our line up which I believe is also something we are missing.
Interesting to see how this pans out.
