Steven Gerrard has a potential injury crisis on his hands as Leon Balogun picked up a knock after redeeming himself in Nigeria’s important World Cup qualifying win over Central African Republic.
There could now be a selection headache of the wrong kind facing the Rangers manager, with defender Filip Helander already out with a knee injury.
If Balogun is out for any length of time, it means the Ibrox club’s main centre-back options are Connor Goldson and Jack Simpson, with Calvin Bassey also able to fill in if needed.
The match was bittersweet for the 33-year-old as he opened the scoring for the Super Eagles against Central African Republic – just days after he was the culpable party in his side’s historic loss to the same team.
Balogun felt the wrath of the fans and media alike on Thursday as he failed to clear his lines and Karl Namnganda went on to score.
It meant Nigeria experienced their first home defeat in a World Cup qualifier since October 1981.
But they had an instant opportunity to bounce back and Balogun grabbed it with both hands when he showed composure to neatly finish a cross from deep and give Nigeria the lead today.
Victor Osimhen got the second goal to cement their place at the top of their group before Balogun made way for Kenneth Omeruo in the latter stages of the match due to injury.
