There are always games within the game, but this year’s boys golf sectional tournament play was all about learning for the growing Twinsburg squad.
Youthful Twinsburg finished 11th overall out of 18 schools with a score of 368 at the Division I Sectional Championships at the Windmill Lakes Windmill Lakes Golf Course
Oct. 4.
The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to district tournament play.
Twinsburg or its individual players didn’t make the cut, but that doesn’t mean that the Tigers did not gain some knowledge after the tourney.
Senior Pranav Duvvuri tied for 24th overall by firing a round of 82 (40-42).
A heavy hitter off the tees, Duvvuri’s round of 40 was 15th overall as he had plenty of positive moments.
Tiger head coach Scott Levey was pleased with the overall play of Duvvuri in some respects, but his short game struggled at times.
“Pranav’s putting again was the cause of his not playing good enough to advance to districts,” the coach explained.
Sophomore Jack Phillips tied for 54th overall out of 87 golfers. He fired a 92, including an impressive 41 in the front nine at Windmill Lakes.
Phillips also finished sixth overall among sophomores in the field!
“Jack played well on the first nine, but could not hit the ball straight off the tee in the second nine,” pointed out Levey.
“He (Phillips) has made great improvements throughout the year,” said Levey. “It was his first year playing golf and I have great expectations for the next two years.”
Another Tiger making his post season varsity debut in sectional play was freshman Rob Prevette, who finished with a 94 (49-45).
Prevette showed flashes this fall of superb play.
Showing some consistency, junior Dillon Greene carded a 100 with two rounds of 50 for Twinsburg.
Senior Paul Stewart competed and had a strong round of 48 and finished with a 101.
“Our team is young with only Pranav and Paul graduating this year and I think we made a lot of improvements during the season,” explained Levey. “I expect a much better year next season.”
In the team standings, Hudson (307.084) edged Walsh Jesuit (307.089) while Aurora (316.083) and Stow-Munroe Falls (316.085) grabbed the other two team berths to districts over Chagrin Falls (318).
