FORT MYERS, Fla. – After the opening 36 holes of the UNF Collegiate, junior Laura Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay) sits tied for fourth individually while the FGCU women’s golf team is fifth overall heading into Tuesday’s third round at the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club (Par 72, 5926 yards).
The tournament will resume with a shotgun start at 8:45 AM for the final 18 holes. Live scoring will be available through www.GolfStat.com.
“We definitely did not play up to our standards today. As a team, we struggled across-the-board,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “We didn’t really hole any putts or make a lot of birdies, something that is uncharacteristic for us. We are going to make some adjustments tomorrow and will look to put up a better round. We are excited for the opportunity to show what we are capable of tomorrow.”
Host North Florida finished day one as the field leader after posting a score of 589. Sam Houston State is second (590), while Chattanooga (596) is third. The Eagles (607) are just nine strokes behind fourth-place South Alabama (598)
Edmonds shot par in the first round and recorded a three-over 75 in the second round to lead FGCU. She tallied a team-best six birdies on the day including four in the first rounds. The junior is tied with two other players for fourth and sits just three strokes behind individual leader Hanna Alberto (144) of Sam Houston.
Junior Josephine Bertelsen (Vejle, Denmark/Campus Vejle/Western Texas College) tied for 20th after shooting 77 in the first round before bouncing back with a 74 in the second for her first tournament as an Eagle. She was followed by sophomore Sarah Edwards (Jay, Fla./Jay) who finished day one tied for 32nd (75-79—154). Redshirt senior Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre) and redshirt sophomore Haley Yerxa (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) rounded out the quintet tied for 49th (157) and 54th (158), respectively.
The Eagles tied with Sam Houston for the field’s most pars, 119, on the day, but only recorded 10 birdies through the 36 holes played. North Florida led the 17 teams competing with 23 birdies through the two rounds.

Since taking over the program in 2011, Sarah Trew has guided the Eagles to 42 top-five finishes, including 30 over the past five seasons. On top of that, she led the program to a pair of second-place finishes in the ASUN Championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019, signifying the best finishes in program history. She was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and has guided FGCU to some of its best statistical seasons in program history

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 83 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors’ Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
