Kenston football coach Jeff Grubich was reluctant to throw freshman quarterback Dylan Krupp to the wolves a few weeks ago.
That’s no longer the case.
In his first varsity start on Oct. 2, Krupp threw for 97 yards and two touchdowns in helping the Bombers to a 42-15 win over Madison. He completed 11 of 16 passes including scoring strikes to Tymir Cardona and Carson Rivera-Gebeau.
Kenston remains without regular starting quarterback Nikko Georgiou (hand injury). Senior J.P. Germano, the Bombers’ top receiver who moved to quarterback when Georgiou was injured, moved back to his best position against Madison.
“When Nikko went down, we knew (Krupp) wasn’t ready yet,” Grubich said. “He made a lot of progress with the offense and leadership. He was close to being ready for the game against Chardon, but do I want to start a freshman against Chardon?
“This week was the right opportunity. And he played well,” Grubich said. “We’re going to give him more and more to work with this week.”
Kenston (6-1, 2-1) hosts South (7-0, 3-0) in a battle of state-ranked teams on Oct. 8. Kenston is ranked eighth in the state in Division III, while South is fourth in Division II.
“Nikko will be out again this week,” Grubich said. “We’ll see (when he returns). When he’s ready, we’ll turn him loose.”
