Kenya 7s were in fine form in the 2021 World 7s Series finishing third overall after a second-place finish and a third place in the two events held in Canada.
Innocent Simiyu charges scored 44 tries and 29 conversions totaling 278 points in 12 matches. The team had a total of 138 tackles in the two events. All the five debutantes managed to open their try scoring accounts.
Top scorer
Alvin Otieno was the top try scorer for Kenya, landing a total of 11 tries in the 12 matches he played in. He was the fourth overall top try scorer after the likes of Muller du Plessis 13 tries, Malachi Esdale and Max McFarland 12 tries.
Willy Ambaka who played in his 50th and 51st tournament during the two events, crossed the whitewash six times to rank second for Kenya 7s. Captain Nelson Oyoo landed five tries in the two events and has scored a total of 51 tries for Kenya in 187 matches.
Debutant Mark Kwemoi landed four tries to rank fourth. Alvin Otieno, Billy Odhiambo, Daniel Taabu and Jeff Oluoch had three tries. Other debutantes Levy Amunga and Timothy Mmasi had two tries each.
Buffa’s 11 tries earned him 55 points for him to top Shujaa’s points scorers list. 13 conversions and three tries saw Taabu finish second while Amunga’s two tries and 12 conversions saw him end the campaign with 34 points.
Ambaka and Kwemoi were also in the top five.
Buffa also topped the clean breaks list with 12 breaks in the competition. Taabu who only managed seven appearances in Canada due to injury had eight clean breaks.
Ambaka had six clean breaks while Oyoo had four while Marube, Oluoch and Kwemoi had three each.
Buffa also topped the carries lists with 42 carries for Shujaa, Oluoch had 33 carries in the two events. Ambaka had 32 carries, Taabu in just seven appearances had 30 carries, one more than Odhiambo and Oyoo.
Ambaka had the most tackles for Kenya (20 tackles) while four players; Otieno, Odhiambo, Herman Humwa and Harold Anduvate had 15 tackles each.
Shujaa will return to action in December for Dubai 7s.
