August 26, 2021 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – FC Tulsa News Release
TULSA – FC Tulsa forward Joaquín Rivas will continue to represent his country as El Salvador looks to qualify for its first FIFA World Cup since 1982. On Thursday afternoon, “La Selecta” called up Rivas for its latest round of 2022 World Cup qualifiers during the first week of September.
The Salvadorans have now advanced to the “Octagonal” of CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying, a final eight-team round robin tournament which will determine the region’s representatives to the 2022 World Cup. The top three countries in points will automatically advance to the World Cup, while the fourth-place finisher will enter an inter-confederation playoff against a to be determined opponent.
In total, each of the eight teams will play the other seven both at home and on the road between September and March of 2022. Due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, El Salvador will play three matches during the seven-day international window, home matches on September 2 against the United States and September 5 against Honduras, before a road match in Toronto against Canada.
Rivas will be available for FC Tulsa’s home match against Atlanta United 2 on Saturday at ONEOK Field before leaving to prepare for the qualifiers. Tickets to Saturday’s match are available now with kickoff scheduled at 7 p.m. CT.
