GORD HAS HEART SET ON QATAR
Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon is showing no signs of slowing down as he prepares for another season in the Scottish top flight.
And after that, he has the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in his sights.
The 38-year-old ex-Celtic and Sunderland stopper was an unused substitute for Scotland three games at Euro 2020.
Gordon featured in the 2-2 friendly draw against the Netherlands as part of the national team’s preparation for the Euros.
He was part of a trio of keepers Steve Clarke selected for the tournament alongside David Marshall and Jon McLaughlin, but it was only Marshall who played.
But he is keen to remain a part of Clarke’s plans and add to his haul of 57 caps for his country.
And he reckons Scotland can build on the lessons from our first major finals in 23 years ahead of attempting to qualify for Fifa’s global showpiece.
Gordon told the Edinburgh Evening News: “Hopefully we can use that as an experience and try and qualify for the next tournament.
“Obviously we have a couple of hard teams, Austria and Denmark that went quite far and had some great performances so we know it is going to be a real tough fight if we are going to qualify for Qatar.”
Gordon was full of praise for how the experience within the Scotland camp as a whole during the country’s first major tournament since 1998.
He said: “It was great. A great set-up.
“Everything we had, the organisation, facilities we had, the whole trip. We had a great camp.
“A little bit disappointing in a couple of the results. We just never managed to take the lead, get that first goal which would have been so crucial.
“We created chances in all the games and we were never out of them. We were right there but didn’t quite manage to have enough on those occasions.”
