Thiago Silva’s impressive Chelsea stint
Thiago Silva joined Chelsea last summer following the expiration of his deal with PSG.
And the Brazilian, despite his age, has gone on to prove a solid signing for the Blues.
Granted, he does now lack the kind of pace which fans were once accustomed to. But the stopper’s experience nevertheless appears to have had a really positive impact on the Londoners.
Under Thomas Tuchel especially, Chelsea have been a seriously solid defensive unit and Silva, despite his age, has continued to play a big role in that.
The Brazilian’s big-game experience was also crucial in helping Chelsea navigate their way to both the FA Cup final and Champions League final under Tuchel, the latter of which they won vs Manchester City.
Why Chelsea’s Silva is named ‘The Monster’
Now, the Chelsea stopper has been speaking out about his nickname.
Even before his impressive stint with Chelsea, which has already seen him with the Champions League, Silva earned a rather interesting nickname.
The defender has been dubbed ‘O Monstro’, which means ‘The Monster’ in English.
And Silva has now provided an explanation for this nickname, stating it began in Brazil when his former teammate at Fluminense, Fernando Henrique, gave it to him:
“Firstly, it was because of the good performances I’d put in, and due to the confidence that not only I, but all of the defence was giving to our goalkeeper.
“Actually, it was not the fans who came up with that nickname, it was the goalkeeper, Fernando Henrique [dos Anjos].
“He was the one who came up with that nickname after a move from the opposition in which I made a good recovery and was able to prevent them from scoring.
“Then, he looked at me and said ‘Nice one, Monster!’ Then the fans heard that through the microphones behind the goal and started calling me Monstro.”
