Italy 3-0 Switzerland: Euro 2020 player ratings

Italy were the first team to book their place in the last 16 of this summer’s Euro 2020 after they cruised to a 3-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday night.

Roberto Mancini’s side thought they’d opened the scoring midway through he first half after Giorgio Chiellini fired home, but his joy was curtailed by a VAR decision that pointed to a handball in the build-up.

Italy didn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock as Manuel Locatelli finished off superb move, before the Sassuolo man doubled his and his team’s tally in the second half with a fine long-range strike.

Mancini’s side secured the three points late on as Ciro Immobile’s effort slipped under the hands of Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer to confirm Italy’s place in the knockout rounds.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) – 6/10 – Only had one shot on target to deal with all evening and did everything that was asked of him.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo (RB) – 6/10 – Stepped in for the injured Alessandro Florenzi and couldn’t have asked for a much more comfortable evening.

Leonardo Bonucci (CB) – 7/10 – Coped well with the early change in centre-back partner and looked steady throughout.

Giorgio Chiellini (CB) – 6/10 – Thought he’d opened the scoring early on only to be denied by a VAR check which chalked his goal off for a handball in the build-up. Withdrawn shortly after due to an injury.

Leonardo Spinazzola (LB) – 7/10 – Not quite the marauding performance we saw from him in Italy’s first outing against Turkey, but effective nonetheless.

Jorginho (DM) – 7/10 – The Chelsea man kept things ticking over in the midfield and helped drag his side up the pitch with progressive passing.

Nicolo Barella (CM) – 7/10 – Grabbed himself an assist for Locatelli’s second and was busy in the midfield all game.

Manuel Locatelli (CM) – 9/10 – The standout performer of the evening. Produced a fantastic late run to get on the end of Domenico Berardi’s cross to open the scoring and then doubled his side’s lead with a brilliant strike into the bottom corner.

Domenico Berardi (RW) – 7/10 – Superb piece of play to lay Locatelli’s first of the night on a plate for him. Much better performance than we saw against Turkey.

Ciro Immobile (ST) – 7/10 – Had to wait until the closing stages to get his goal, but thoroughly deserved it after leading the line well.

Lorenzo Insigne (LW) – 7/10 – Picked up little pockets of space in between the Swiss backline and midfield and was a menace all evening.

Francesco Acerbi (CB) – 6/10 – Introduced to the game early on and did well to pick up the pace.

Yann Sommer (GK) – 4/10 – Not a lot he could do about either of Italy’s first two goals but the third of the night should easily have been kept out.

Kevin Mbabu (RWB) – 5/10 – Couldn’t contain Lorenzo Insigne and will be glad to see the back of the Napoli man.

Nico Elvedi (CB) – 6/10 – Not a lot he could do about any of the goals and clearly struggled as Switzerland changed to a back four. Still, stuck to his task and was combative throughout.

Fabian Schar (CB) – 4/10 – The Newcastle man was given the run-around by the Italy front three and looked like he was seeing stars by the end of the game.

Manuel Akanji (CB) – 5/10 – Stood off Immobile and allowed him far too much time to pick his spot and put the game beyond doubt.

Ricardo Rodriguez (LWB) – 5/10 – Was key to his side’s play against Wales but could barely get out of his own half tonight and was nowhere near as effective.

Remo Freuler (CM) – 5/10 – Given absolutely no chance against Italy’s rampant midfield. Can’t really mark him down too much because he didn’t do much wrong, he just couldn’t get near the opposition.

Granit Xhaka (CM) – 5/10 – See the above. Completely overran in the centre of the field and wasn’t helped out much by his colleagues.

Xherdan Shaqiri (AM) – 4/10 – Who? The Liverpool midfielder barely had a touch of the ball in the first half. A little more active in the second but nowhere near enough.

Breel Embolo (ST) – 5/10 – Nowhere near as effective as he was last time out against Wales and really struggled given the lack of service into him.

Haris Seferovic (ST) – 5/10 – Struggled just as much as his strike partner and was eaten up by the Italian backline.
