Week four of the 2021 Chinese Super League season has concluded, so here is the round-up of results from the four matches in the Guangzhou-based Group A.
Shandong Taishan 2-0 Qingdao
The first match of Group A’s week four fixtures began with a fairly routine victory for Shandong Taishan, who extended their unbeaten run and claimed all three points against Qingdao.
Wu Xinghan and Guo Tianyu netted within two minutes of each other, giving the current Group A leaders a 2-0 lead after just eight minutes into the match, and Qingdao could not crawl their way back.
Despite sharing chances in front of goal (11), Qingdao had just one shot on target and Shandong dominated the match, ensuring they maintain a three-point lead atop the group standings.
Qingdao’s disappointment was made worse when Zhu Ting saw red in the 84th minute.
Guangzhou City 2-4 Shenzhen
The second match of the week saw a shock result as Shenzhen defeated the previously undefeated Guangzhou City in a truly clinical showing.
Veteran forward Gao Lin opened the scoring after just eight minutes, and Guangzhou City remained behind for the rest of the match, despite controlling more of the ball with 51% possession.
Li Yuanyi scored six minutes later and Alan Kardec netted a brace, his first coming in the 34th minute and his second just two minutes after the half-time break.
Guangzhou City scored two consolation goals late on with Tiago Leonço in the 72nd minute and Jown Cardona 15 minutes later, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong Shenzhen effort – with both teams now sharing identical records and points.
Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic 3-2 Henan Songshan Longmen
The third fixture could arguably be considered one of the most exciting matches of the season so far, with virtually everything you could imagine happening as Chongqing battle back from a two-goal deficit to claim victory.
Henan took the lead surprisingly after just one minute, through Henrique Dourado, and they even extended their lead in the 54th minute through Chen Pu – seemingly heading for a convincing victory. Shuai Yang pulled one back for Chongqing five minutes after Chen Pu’s goal, and then on it was a complete collapse from Henan.
Toni Šunjić received a red card seven minutes after Shuai Yang’s goal and Chongqing began to take charge of the man advantage, with Huang Xiyang scoring three minutes later.
Miller Bolaños netted Chongqing’s third goal in the 78th minute and just 60 seconds later, Henan’s Zhong Jinbao also saw red, leaving his side with just nine men by the end of the 90 minutes – pulling Chongqing off the bottom of the standings and leapfrogging Henan in the process.
Cangzhou Mighty Lions 0-2 Guangzhou FC
Week four for Group A started with a routine victory for Shandong Taishan, and it ended in the same manner for Fabio Cannavaro’s Guangzhou FC side.
Guangzhou claimed a simple 2-0 victory against Cangzhou Mighty Lions, who have now slumped to the bottom of the Group A standings – still searching for their first win of the season.
Gao Zhunyi opened the scoring for Guangzhou in the 35th minute and Cangzhou never had a chance to bring things level, with no shots on target and just three chances in total.
Yang Liyu extended Guangzhou’s lead in the 87th minute, ensuring all three points in one of the most straightforward victories they will claim this season.
