European Super League collapses
The major news in the footballing world over the last week has of course been the European Super League.
The news broke on Sunday evening that 12 of Europe’s biggest clubs had agreed to form a breakaway league that was set to rival/replace the Champions League.
Six of the 12 founding sides came from the Premier League, with Arsenal of course one of those teams.
However, Arsenal and the remaining five PL sides all opted to leave the league on Tuesday evening.
Arteta on Arsenal being in ESL
On the back of Arsenal’s inclusion in the league, there were a lot of question marks over why they had been chosen to take part in a ‘Super League’.
Arsenal have not won a league title since 2004, they have missed out on Champions League football for many years now and this season they seem unlikely to be even finishing inside the top-six.
However, Mikel Arteta has since explained why Arsenal deserved their spot in the Super League.
When asked what his response would be to people who said Arsenal didn’t deserve to be in the Super League, the Spaniard stated:
“That we are one of the best clubs in the world, and we could not be any prouder to represent this club, its history, and we totally understand the demands and the excellence that we have to be pursuing.
“You cannot deny the history, and that history is attached to results, it’s attached to a certain way of doing things, to certain values, to representing those in the right manner, to having the amount of support and love that we have around the world.
“And that’s not a coincidence, that’s been earned over years and years with merit to a lot of people who have been involved in the history of the football club.”
🌎 “We are one of the best clubs in the world.
“You cannot deny the history, and that history is attached to results.”
