Rangers winger Jake Hastie has endured a disappointing loan spell at Motherwell this season and Steven Gerrard should ensure that the 23-year-old leaves Ibrox for good this summer.
Since joining the Light Blues from Motherwell on a free transfer in the summer of 2019, Hastie has managed just two senior appearances for Rangers, neither of which have come in the Premiership.
Last season saw the youngster join Rotherham United on loan in League One, where he made 16 appearances in all competitions, managing just three goals and one assist.
Should Hastie be released this summer?
Yes
No
He was clearly seen to be behind the likes of Ryan Kent, Brandon Barker and Jordan Jones in Gerrard’s side at the start of this season and was sent out on loan to Motherwell for the campaign.
However, he has struggled to have much impact in Graham Alexander’s side this term, making just 13 appearances in all competitions and failing to contribute a single goal or assist.
Therefore, it seems clear that Hastie isn’t up to Rangers’ standards and, in a summer where Gerrard and Ross Wilson should be looking to get rid of some deadwood, the 23-year-old is one who should be shown the door at Ibrox.
Fortunately for Gerrard, the winger’s contract with Rangers is set to expire in the summer and it seems clear that, after a disappointing two years with the club, he will be let go in the next few months.
The youngster reportedly earns £4,500 per week at Ibrox, so you could definitely argue that he has been stealing a wage during his time at the club. He has been deemed not good enough to feature in the first team, whilst his disappointing loan spells will have done little to convince Gerrard that he deserves a chance next season.
The 40-year-old must therefore ensure that Hastie leaves the club this summer, as it is clearly the right thing to do from both a footballing and financial perspective.
