To much fan admiration, Steve Cohen announced on Monday that the Mets would indeed wear black jerseys again for a few games this season.
During a Zoom call with reporters today, Pete Alonso broke some more news on the matter.
“I’m excited for the Friday night blacks, it’s gonna be a part on Friday night,” Alonso said, revealing that the team plans for when they’ll wear the jerseys.
The jerseys have been out of the team’s rotation since 2014 and haven’t been consistently worn as away jerseys since 2008, but fans and players alike have been hammering for the organization to bring them back.
Now under new ownership, Cohen promised to bring them back, and the players are more than excited to put those threads on their backs.
“It was awesome,” Alonso said when the clubhouse heard the news. “Everybody’s fired up and I hope the Mets fans are fired up too, because it’s going to be special. …Mark it in your calendars.”
