Cubs activate Ryan from COVID-19 related IL originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Kyle Ryan is back. The Cubs announced Sunday that they’d activated the left-handed reliever from the COVID-19 related injured list. In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated right-hander Robert Stock for assignment.
Ryan missed the first couple weeks of Spring Training but joined team workouts Saturday. He bolsters a bullpen that has been taking shape in the past couple weeks.
This week, the Cubs agreed to a major-league deal with Ryan Tepera (pending a physical) and officially added Pedro Strop to Cubs camp. Earlier this month, they signed right-hander Brandon Workman and re-signed left-hander Andrew Chafin.
Ryan is another member of the bullpen that went from a Cubs weakness to strength last season, posting a National-League best 2.96 ERA in September.
Ryan played in 18 games for the Cubs last season, posting a 5.17 ERA and recording one save. He strung together seven appearances, starting Aug. 30, in which he allowed just one total hit. Ryan also had a late start to 2020 summer camp, after a protocol-related delay.
