World No. 30 Frances Tiafoe is confident he can play at a very high level but adds it’s just about figuring out how to perform on a high level consistently. Tiafoe, who is ranked just one place above his career-high ranking, has one ATP title – which he won at the Delray Beach Open in 2018.
“If I play great tennis, I know where I can be, it’s just keeping my head down and doing the work, which I have been doing,” Tiafoe said, per the Indian Wells tournament website. “I’m just gonna worry about my next match”.
Before the start of the season, Tiafoe vowed he would do everything he can to make the most during his prime years. “Let’s take this career seriously, these next six, seven years and try to get the most out of myself,” he said at the end of last season.
“I know what I can do, I don’t think anyone has ever doubted that, but it’s: what does Frances Tiafoe look like on a day-to-day basis?”
Tiafoe sees an opening on the ATP Tour
Tiafoe is still pretty young as he is just 24.
“There’s an opening in tennis,” Tiafoe mentioned. “Rafa and these guys aren’t playing every week. Novak, whatever he’s going through. Fed and Andy on the brink, so, you know the [next generation’s] top guys are good, but they’re beatable.
It’s exciting times for us, there’s finally an opening for us, and I think we’re going to take it”. Tiafoe has proved capable of competing well against the top players as he pushed Roger Federer into a five-setter when they met at the US Open in 2017.
“Sometimes when he plays matches his mind may wander a little bit – I think that has been happening less and less and it kind of shows with his consistency,”Jose Higueras, who worked with Federer in the past, told the Indian Wells tournament website.
“He’s capable of playing with anybody but at the same time you have to be consistent enough if you want to win tournaments to play every day to a pretty high standard”.
