Jetha leads way for England at Euro Minis

Sienna Jetha was the best finisher for England at the Euro Mini Championships in France as she ended up in 13th position.

Jetha (pictured above, photo by Michael Loveder) was one of six English youngsters playing in two age groups at the event, which was being held for the first time since 2019 because of the pandemic.

She battled through three group stages in the Girls’ 2009 category to reach the last 32, where she defeated Diana Koliennokova of Ukraine 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-3).

She was beaten in the last 16 by Alexia Nodin of French region Auvergne-Rhone Alpes, but two victories in her next three matches in the positional play-offs saw her end in 13th.

In the same category, Isabella Turner-Samuels had a good 3-2 (8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5) win over Romane Edan (Ile de France) in the first group stage but was unable to advance to the main draw. Her tournament – her first international experience with England – ended in the group stage of the consolation event.

In the same age group, Max Radiven and Abraham Sellado competed in the boys’ section and both won five out of six matches in the first two group stages.

Radiven lost his two matches in the third group stage, but Sellado won his to advance to the final group stage, where he was beaten twice.

Both boys therefore ended up in the consolation event – Sellado went straight into the last 32 and Radivden won one of two further group matches to join him.

However, both went out at that stage, Sellado having to withdraw through injury and Radiven beaten in four by Vadym Soltys of Ukraine.

In the younger (2011) age group, Teagan Khazal and Laura North represented England for the first time.

Khazal won four out of seven matches in the first three group stages, but two defeats in the final group stage saw him go into the consolation event.

There, he worked his way through the earlier rounds to reach the semi-finals, but defeat in that match and in the third play play-off meant he had to settle for fourth.

North’s best performance was a 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-8) over Sara Haglund of Sweden in the first consolation group stage, but she was unable to add to that.
