Softball Sweeps Yale – CCSU

 Central Connecticut State University softball swept its Wednesday doubleheader with Yale, picking up their second and third win of the season. The Blue Devils rallied from a 6-3 deficit in game two to win.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Kim Howard got the scoring started for CCSU with a leadoff solo homerun in the top of second inning. It is the senior’s second home run of the season.
  • Paige Stringer followed up Howard’s solo shot with one of her own. The sophomore launched one out to right field to lead of the top of the fourth for CCSU.
  • The Blue Devils got a rally going in the top of the fifth inning. Brooke Fedison got things started with a leadoff single and Meg Gorman drew a walk after that. A passed ball advanced both runners, and a sac fly from Matison Piripavel scored Fedison. Stringer recorded her second hit of the day that advanced Gorman to third. Howard knocked a double down the left field line that scored Gorman and secured Howard’s second RBI of the afternoon. With two outs down, Bri Walker hit another double for CCSU that scored Stringer and Howard.
  • After Karri Marks pitched six innings of one-hit ball, the Bulldogs were able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth with solo home run. Yale then hit a two-out triple, but Marks got out of the inning without any more damage.
  • The Blue Devils got the first out of the seventh inning, but Yale did not go down easy. The Bulldogs proceeded to load up the bases and Kaylee Whittaker came in to relieve Marks. Whittaker quickly got through the next two batters and got out of the jam.

NOTES

  • Six runs ties the most runs that the Blue Devils have scored in a single game this season. They have done so twice (3/11 against UMass Lowell and 2/27 at North Carolina State).
  • The Blue Devils were one hit short of tying their season high (nine hits in a game).

KEY MOMENTS

  • CCSU picked right back up where they left off, getting on the board quickly in game two. Piripavel got things started with a single out to left field and she quickly got to second after a passed ball. Howard got another single for CCSU out to center field that scored Piripavel.
  • A leadoff double from Bulldogs proved dangerous for CCSU as Yale smacked a single right after that tied the game back up at one. The Bulldogs hit back-to-back singles after this that scored another run for Yale. Ashley Antano
  • A walk and a double from Yale put two runners in scoring position for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second inning. A bases clearing single from Yale scored two more runs and brought their lead up to 4-1.
  • CCSU came back swinging in the top of the third. Piripavel drew a walk to start things off and was pushed along the base path by Stringer. Howard sent a double out to right center to score Piripavel and Walker followed that up with a double to left center that scored Howard. Yale got out of the jam eventually, but not before CCSU quickly made it a one run ball game.
  • The Bulldogs again got their first two batters on base to start the third inning. This time a single and sac bunt got both runs on the board, giving Yale a 6-3 advantage over the Blue Devils.
  • Jazmin Lasane started a fourth inning rally with a double to get the bats going. Molly Bruyns launched a double to left center right after that to score Lasane. After Bruyns advanced to third on a passed ball, Brooke Fedison ripped a clutch two out single to score Bruyns and make it a one run ball game.
  • Stringer got the sixth inning going with a single out to centerfield. Howard followed her lead with a double, and Walker brought the tying run to the plate with an RBI single. The Blue Devils nearly took the lead after this, but the Bulldogs were able to get an out at the plate to keep the game tied at six.
  • The three run rally was nearly for nothing after a scary situation in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs were able to draw three walks to load up the bases. With the game winning run 60 feet from the plate, Whittaker was able to deliver a strike out and draw a pop up to get out of the tight jam.
  • An extra runner was placed on second to start the eighth inning in New Haven. Meg Dugas was put in to pinch run for CCSU, and a single from Lasane scored her, giving CCSU its first lead in the game since the top of the first. 
  • Bruyns ripped a single to right field that pushed Lasane up to third. Kaitie Master hit a bases clearing double with two outs on the board that gave CCSU a three run lead of its own.
  • Meg Gorman capped off the electric eigthth inning with a single that scored Master. 
  • With the Bulldogs runner on second, Whittaker struck out two batters to close out an epic comeback.

NOTES

  • This is the most runs the Blue Devil have scored this season, and also the team’s first sweep.
  • Molly Bruyns and Kim Howard each had three hits for the Blue Devils, the most by anyone on the team this season in a single game.
