NFL training camps are already in full swing, but there’s one significant domino still left to fall. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is looking for a new after undergoing offseason surgery.
The 49ers have made it clear Garoppolo will be traded before the start of the regular season. The team committed to second-year quarterback Trey Lance at the start of training camp, signaling Garoppolo’s run in San Francisco was over.
Though Garoppolo is finally healthy, the team will limit him to working out on the side.
The 49ers likely don’t want to create a competition between Garoppolo and Lance and don’t want to risk Garoppolo getting injured during a practice.
While some teams could benefit from having Garoppolo under center, a trade may prove difficult for the 49ers. The team can trim a significant amount of Garoppolo’s salary if it cuts him before Week 1. Opposing teams know that, and might be waiting for Garoppolo to hit the market before going after him.
