Hartford Hawks Athletics – Romero Leads Men’s Golf at The Connecticut Cup

ELLINGTON, Conn. — The Hartford men’s golf team took seventh place in a 12-team field at The Connecticut Cup, hosted by UConn at Ellington Ridge Country Club. Sophomore Manuel Romero, who competed as an individual, paced the Hawks over the three-day event after posting his first career top-five finish with a three-round score of 5-over 221.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES

  • Romero led a group of 18 individuals after tying for fifth place for a career-best finish
  • The sophomore shot a 71 (-1) in the opening round and was in first place after the tournament’s opening round
  • Combining for team scores of 304 in each of the final two rounds, Hartford edged Fairfield by one stroke to take seventh with a 918
  • Senior Matthew Schwab and junior Jared Winiarz paced the Hawks’ scorers after tying for 29th with respective 13-over 229s
  • Freshman Conor Byrne (15-over 331) and grad student Elias Gross (18-over 334) rounded out Hartford’s scorers, tying for 38th and 45th, respectively
  • Rookie Michael Amari tied for 25th as an individual with of 12-over 228
  • Boston College, which landed four top-five finishers, won the tournament by 21 strokes
  • The Eagles’ Brandon Kewalramani earned medalist honors with a 2-over 218
