Chelsea have today been linked to signing a new left back in the summer transfer window.

According to Goal, Chelsea are interested in signing Brighton left back Marc Cucurella, with the former Barcelona man being on their radar for the summer.

It’s no surprise to see Chelsea linked with wanting to sign a new left back this summer, despite having the likes of Ben Chilwell, Emerson Palmieri, Baba Rahman, Marcos Alonso, and Ian Maatsen all on their books.

None of them are really to the same level to challenge Chilwell for that regular starting spot, and this is what Chelsea needs. Maatsen could get there but he isn’t yet, and Alonso is likely to try a new venture this summer rather than staying and playing second fiddle to Chilwell for the foreseeable future. He isn’t getting any younger and will want to be playing more.

I do think that both flanks are going to be reinforced this summer, maybe even by a player who can play on both like Sergino Dest. Chelsea could use strengthen up on both sides, especially if Cesar Azpilicueta leaves as well which looks quite likely right now.

Thomas Tuchel’s system until in recent matches has been built around strong wing-backs, but recently he has lacked those with his two best ones being injured, and they have really suffered as a result, he’s even been forced to switch to a back four. This just shows how important it is for Chelsea to have top class wing-backs and cover in that area, and why a player like Cucurella is now being linked.
